I played it for about 6 months when it went live, and 3 in beta.

It was a game with huge potential, but back then it also huge flaws, which possible has been corrected.
Such as the fact that lag had to big an impact on combat, especially with Jump-gate camping. (Which I belive CCP tried to fix with randomizing the spawn locations).
Also back then there were nothing really to do in the game, other then mine or fight. And there was little to mine towards, because battleships wheren't yet implemented (they got implemented as I left) and Space stations where just a pipe-dream at that time.
Also the bugs where different pieces of equiptment kept multiplying attackmodifiers - making it possible to take down opponent ships so fast due to it.

The one thing I liked about EVE was that your character continued to skill up even if you weren't online. That was a nice feature, but other then that it needed much to much gaming to keep up with the more hardcores gamers - it wasn't terrible casual-player friendly.

It was a decent MMOG, but potential just wasn't enough to keep me going after my first subscription though. It was way to uniform for that. (But as said, that might have changed ever since).

Perhaps this would get some more replies in the MMORPG forum... more people know about the subject there.

Eve defines pvp. It's a no holds barred almsot entirley player run universe of endless peace & war, hard business and politics. You can lose 2 years worth of play in a second (there are a number of famous corps and pilots who've pulled off things you'd never believe). How does a Merc corp planting operatives into a mega-corp for over a year until they reached enough trust and status to strip the corp blind of billions and billions in assests sound?

I recently lost my Heavy-Assault Cruiser and all my tech 2 gear because of accidentaly going into a high security system (i'm a pirate/murderer thus I have a very low security status, restricting me from safe space), i'm almost ruined. But that's why it's so fantastic.

You get a rush like no other in gaming when in pvp, because you acually have so much to lose. It can often take weeks, months or a year to get back into a ship depending on what you were flying.

Need advice: mmo for test.

Im currently playing EVE-Online and IWD2 from time to time. But now i´d like
to test anoter mmo, without paying for it ofc. So it has to be one of those
that offers a trialperiod. Also i´d prefer an mmo thats based on swords, magic
and the usuall D&D like WoW. I played WoW for 6 months and still hold an
account there, but not interessted atm to reopen it.

So does anyone know of any mmo that offers a free trial, where you can get
far if you´re dedicated enough ?

Why not check out Guild Wars. From my understanding, it doesn't have a subscription fee, and it is more fantasy based.

I´ve played EVE since Beta and all ican say is, there is no other mmo that even
comes close to the community that EVE has. If you fight long enough on one
side, you really, and i meen really, start hateing your enemy.
And the PvP effects your RL. Its not like in WoW where you respawn without
any penalty. in less then a week i´ve lost 2 battleships and several Assult frigates,
thats a total value of hundreds of milions, and it feels.

@ Dreez: Considering that this is an MMO, and that MMORPG Discussion already had a thread for Discussion in the game, I merged your thread with this one.

I lost 9 months of my life playing Eve......eventually I had to give it up as it was affecting my marriage, and I wasn't being a great father to my children.

It's true that it could take days or weeks to build up a skill that enabled you to use a new piece of equipment, or to earn enough money to buy a more powerful ship. The choice of activities was so great - you could mine asteroids for rare materials, try smuggling banned goods through a star system, become a pirate and raid other ships carrying valuable materials, go to war with a corporation against another corporation. Or you could just accept missions that the game gave you in order to earn cash and status, all going towards buying and upgrading a more powerful and dangerous ship.

I left the game in possession of a powerful battlecruiser, but I had my sights set on the Raven battleship, and maybe in 2 or 3 months I could have got my hands on one. It's the time you put into it that makes it so intense, get into a battle with someone, make a mistake and you can lose months. Of course you can insure your ship, butnot the modules you customise it with, and from what I remember some of your skills take a hit as well.

Because of this a lot of people take it very seriously, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you see it. I'd defiitely recommend giving it a go, but be warned - it exerts a pull like no other game I ever played, and like an alchoholic I dare not take another sip.
