Creating a MMORPG - Need Ideas

Well, everyones loves MMORPG's... the problem is, as much as we all like them, we end up paying though our... umm teeth. What do i say to that? BAH! WHY DON'T I JUST MAKE ONE!?

and that is what i've decided to do. I wish to make an MMORPG, and i would like all the help i can get. Give me any idea's and such that would make a Midevil Fantasy MMORPG you favourite of all time?

Also, I do need help programming this thing, so if your a fellow programmer, JOIN ME! RPGER'S OF THE WORLD UNITE!

Think it is a rather impressive or rather courages attempt if you are serious.

And if you are, maybe it would be better to get ideas, stories etc and write them down and present them to a gaming corperation instead.
The creation of any decent MMO. game takes the better part of many years and they are entering a cut-throat market with titles as EVE-Online, DAoC, Anarchy Online, EQ 1/2, Ultima, SWG, Shadowbane and titles on the way such as World of Warcraft, Horizones, Dragon Empires and several others I can't remember or haven't heard of.

It requieres mucho time, money, tallented people such as programmers, artists, story writers etc and on top of that - much more money.

But there could maybe be an idea in getting ideas and stories, quests, plots and all other things - and then try to sell the idea instead.
That in fact could be interesting

BUT THATS MY POINT! the problem with MMORPG's is that they are to competative, that they are expensive, i don't care home many of you say that "9.95 a month isn't that expensive" or whatever, its the fact that if i wanted to use them, i'd have to pay for the game AND pay to use it... thats like me paying every month to use my computer that i bought, why would i do that?

Games aren't as hard as they seem, and right now i'm not looking for much. Right now all i'm look to make is a simple RPG, not even multiplayer as of yet... so i can work on the workings of your character and the monsters, until that is complete, i won't even worry about working on mass online conectivity... but i would like some input as to what i should add...

What i'm thinking as of now is a kind of warcraft3-like perspective, but focusing on only one person... controls would be like diablo, where you can set left and right mouse buttons to do different actions... and as for magic, i was planning of having a rune system, like possibly qwe, asd, zxc and have it so people need to enter a series of runes to cast a spell. the reason i thought of this was because i hate how everyone can just get a high level and cast all the biggest spells as fast as they want. With the rune system, i can make, mabye a time limit or something, so you acctually have to be skilled at a spell to cast it, and this way i could make many secret spells that i can leave to the users to learn themselves...

for example, a casting session would go as follows...
the player would enter the desired spells runes in order on the keyboard, which would show on the screen somewhere so you can see what you typed... after you are complete, you would press the button that you have set as spell casting, (like right mouse button) and, if the spell is valid, and you have enough spell points, it would be cast. If the spell requires a target, the cursor would change to a target cursor and you can select you target...

Please, give me any reactions you have to this way of thinking, and feel free to give your own ideas...

and if i ever do make the game pay, so that i can somehow make some sort of profit, i was thinking maybe an arcade style payment... like a quarter a life or something, which would make people want to stay alive, because as long as you are alive, you don't have to pay... but i don't plan that anytime soon, since i haven't even started the coding or testing of the game...

anyways, making posts helps me understand what you would like, so help me out ok?

Your magic system seems very inventive, and unique, which I like. Though, I personally would change one or two things. Have it so the play can choose the spell, prior to 'inciting' the runes, then have them insert the proper runes, or keyboard commands. That way, you could even add voice to it, and actually make it like they are casting the spell, and adding a touch of realism, and making the spells more then just "fireball" or "lightening bolt".

Aside from that, people might think the magic system slow, but the more hardcore RP'ers will be attracted to the game, which is, of course, something you would want.

The magic system would be nice - especially if you added voices to the entering of runes so it would sound like the spell is actual casted, and as Aegis says it would be a deterrant to the "hack n' slash" speedclicking wich would be a nice change of pace.

Regarding perspective, I'd recommend going like NwN but with the camera HAK modifications.
I hate static camerars especially, now after I've tried NwN with the HAK (I keep trying to rotate and zoom in BG2 now).
And the isometric view of BG2 is annoying to me now
I haven't played W3, so don't know how free that camera perspective is.

Yeah, the choosing a spell before entering runes is a good idea, and although a rotatable camera would be fun, it'd probably make it about 4 times harder to code, which would kind of suck, but it would be nice...

As for Warcraft 3 the camera isn't really rotateable, you can just zoom in and out. I got annoyed with NwN tho because the camera never stood still, like if you wanted to stay zoomed in most of the time it was impossible because it always made you zoom out...

but yeah, thats what i was definitely going for, since most likely my game won't be amazing in the graphics field at first, i'd want hardcore RPG's to be attracted to its gameplay, plus, casting spells in my view is always too easy in games, this will put some skill into it at least...

One advice though is to think of quests and dialogs. This will be a major part if you intend it to be more RP orientated then Diablo Hack n' Slash.

Especially if you have plans of making it MMO/Multiplayer at some point in the future.

Try to find and create quests that differ from the usual Fed-Ex or Kill Mob X while waiting 12 hours type stuff.
Although if RP is emphasize RP there is oppertunity in Fed-Ex and Kill Mob X, but they aren't as fun

EDIT: Just remembered, that spell system you suggest seems much like what I remember in Ultima Underworld II.

Hmm, i've never played Ultima Underworld 2, i got the first one for my pocket pc, but the controls are hard to use with a PPC, so i don't play it much...

Yeah I've been told by other people that the storyline is whats going to hold me back most, so i've been thinking of the world, and your purpose and things... thanks for the heads up tho

Why make a game like world of warcraft or runescape when you can just play world of warcraft and runescape?

Never played Arx Fatalis or the Ultima Underworld series?
It is the best damn magic system ever designed though, hard to top.

Black & White has a similar yet far simplified system in place.

On a sidenote: Ultima Underworld is abandonware now. You can download it on most of the oldie sites and run it with Dosbox. If you'd like to take another look at how it is designed there that is.
