Dead? The RPG market isn't dead. Three major titles were due out this year. Compare that to the group of 3-4 years that preceded BG1, when there wasn't a single major RPG release, and RPG devs were talking about producing "RPG lites" to appeal to a broader audience. (Sirtech actually made a game like this. It flopped, miserably.)
It just happens that one of the titles was a dud because the devs knew better than their intended audience, while the second presents an excellent framework for a future game, but lacks the game, itself. The third, KotoR, should please a lot of RPG fans, though it appeals to a younger, more BG1 player type than, say, PS:T or BG2. Problematic games didn't mean that a great deal of money isn't being poured into this game genre: far from it.
