Character Saves...?

My friend and I are playing multiplayer online. The game saves my character ONLY in the game save file, and only because I host. We cant figure out how to save our character as a solid file for the characters folder. We REALLY got aggrivated after a 6 hour dungeon/sewer crawl only to have him start out again at level 1. Also, how do we import single player characters into the multi player?

Its under the attribute menu. Bottom left hand corner has an 'export' button. Not sure if single player and multiplayer characters cross over, I haven't tried playing in multiplayer. Fun?
