The configurations are code. Most of them require that you figure out the code for yourself. So, a configuration might say something along the lines of that to get such and such to work, you need nickel fuel, then to use cogs, then to use chimney, and then push tiger. So you'd buy or find nicket fuel,load it into the fuel furnace. Then you'd push cogs, then chimney, then the tiger button. (You probably know this, but the various machines you'll need to activate are all around the zone. They aren't just located in that specific building) Voila, you get whatever bonus that particular configuration gives you. The trick is to simply decipher the configurations (most of the time figuring them out is easy enough), follow the right order, and make sure you have the fuel its asking for (you'll buy special fuel items from merchants, or find them in your travels).
