Here I've been thinking that there was a fault in my game copy for the last day: my bard showed spells of a level, but no choice in individual spell copies learned! And he couldn't memorize scrolls, either.
Turns out I'd forgotten a little detail: in 3E, bards learn spells like sorcs. This rather makes 'em more powerful, IMO, though I was sorry to find that Magic Missile wasn't among the choices.
