Seeking a good Bard setup

How can I get the most out of the Bard class? I need this guy to cover my thieving duties as well.

Hi.

I often elect a bard based build to act as the parties "skill based" character, who acts as thief, scout, loremaster and diplomat.

I think my last build was something like

Tiefling (You could of course use Halfling, or plain human)
Rogue (X) Bard (Y) - I think my goal was Rogue (5) Bard (11)

STR 08
DEX 16
CON 10
INT 20
WIS 08
CHA 16

Hope this helps.

This build however is not suitable for melee, and when combat begins should stand back and either support with ranged attacks, spells, and singing.
