i created only a character thinking that npcs would join me along the way.
however all threads i read speak (i think) of parties created at the start of the game.
i won't find npcs that can join me?

Nope, if you want NPCs to join you, you need to play BG. Your party should be created at the start of the game, but you can change party members throughout the story. If you look at your interface, you see there is a picture of a head (character arbitration). Clicking this allows you to modify your party, in your case, add members.

As a final note, if you are looking for a challenge, than continue playing with one person.
