Multicalssing penalty - what does it mean?

I wish to multiclass my Cleric to fighter, but I see that his favourite class is Paladin. He cannot become paladin because
he is not Lawful Good. So if I MC him to fighter I see that I have MC penalty of 20%. What does this mean exactly?
What or where does this penaly affect me?

Thank-you.

If that class of Fighter is more than 1 away from your Cleric class, all XP that character earns is reduced by 20%.
If there had been the chance to go Paladin then the penalty would not apply (the same applys for all favoured classes).

Hi,

What do you mean "More than 1 away"? 1 away what?
So the only thing it applies to is experience, it does not affect in combat for example, yes?

Thanks.

1 level in difference between the classes.

So if one class is level 10 and the other is level 8 - you will have the penalty. If they were 10/9 instead you would not. (Not taking into account favored class).

(Isn't such information in the manual by the way? I don't have the game, so I can't give a reference, but it is 3ed D&D rules)

I meant more than 1 level away from each other (e.g. Cleric 10/ Fighter 8 would get the penalty, Cleric 10 Fighter 9 wouldn't). I should have explained that better.
So as Xandax says. I believe a standard Human character takes their first class as a favoured class, so there is no penalty for multi-classing to a second class (it is added for more multi-classes beyond 2 though).

It would affect experience gained from combat too in addition to Quest experience gained.

So actually it refers to level difference not class difference.
The level gap between the classes until the accumulated levels reach 30 am I right?

Thanks.
