Move silently skill

Can anyone explain exactly what this skill does.

I get it is so the monster wont face you when you approach to him from behind, or being less targeted when you move close, but if you are hiding, it has no use? So, you can use the skill hide to sneak around and backstab without having to put points in move silently at all?

If you're already hidden in shadows you've to succeed a move silently check every round to stay hidden.

I actually find the move silently skill more valuable than the hide skill. You can only hide when out of sight anyway, so if you fail, you just wait a minute and try again. In contrast, when a move silently fails, you could be really exposed, especially if you are sneaking around to scout.
