I didnt get the letters back in Targos, do i need them??? i so hope not or im totally fried

In targos in the prologue

Go to the big tent near the gate and talk to everyone, one of them will ask you to take some letters to the captain of one of the reinforcement groups.
Talk to the priests, and one of them will switch the letters with something that will reveal the traitor

Thank you but i know where they are, I never got them and I am now in Ice Temple level 2 and wondering if i needed to have them, Can I continue game with out them?
