| | | Favored Enemy: Which choice is most effective? Just wondering what race you choose if playing a Ranger

| | | The Orc as a favored enemy is very useful *Spoiler*considering the entire first chapter has orcs appearing constantly.

it's true there are many orcs - but orcs are quite weak - better take trolls or constructs /golems
trolls are tough enemies and you will encounter them at many points of the game...
golems have a high DR and are quite tough - so you might want some extra damage to get through the DR!

| Constructs/golems doesn't appear to be a choice for IWD2 (at least its not showing up my selection screen). Could you be thinking of BG2? |

| | BGS has contructs..? I don't think so, but it was a long time ago I played that... In IWD2, humans and drows are my usual choice, no matter what class I pick

| Erm I was under the impression the thread was about choice for a ranger's racial enemy, not what race to play... |

| | | I chose Troll, hate the damnable things. They are strong too. Orc or goblin I wouldn't chose because they are weak and you really don't need the extra to chop them down. |

| | | trolls i always choose. they appear in every chapter ((except the very first)) quite often, and they can appear in HUGE numbers. SPOLER Hardened trolls in the fortress, snow trolls in the wandering village chapter, ice trolls in the ice temples, and hundreds of other places . They can be a huge pain, especially since they can overwhelm you and keep you busy while sum of them regenerate. CHOOSE TROLLS |

| | | I think if you only take 1 level ranger then you only get 1 racial enemy and only a +1 to hit and damage...
So its not going to break the bank if you make a wrong decision.
Trolls is good in general (keep occuring through the game)..
But
Orcs are in the first chapter when you are a vulnerable team and that +1 is gonna count. When you are 10th level an extra +1 is good but it is overshadowed by your base BAB and magic item pluses, I think. This is mitigated to a certain extent by the fact that you are getting more than one attack per round at 10th level so the +1 influences the combat round more than just one time...
So with that last statement I would go with trolls for overall general power
But
Orcs if you want to have a boost in chapter 1

| | | orcs and goblins and such may be weak, but if you are planning on doing HoF mode as well, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to take them.

Orcs and goblins are very though in HoF, so you wont actually waste your selection if you are going to beat it too.
I also at times select trolls, the reason already mentioned by several posters here.
I also select others as well, especially if my party is more oriented in roleplay, and not just to beat the game. In those cases what I select warys alot, since it so dependable of my party and background of my ranger.
