Dragon's eye lvl 4 problem

Me and my friend played icewind dale until we got to level 4 of dragon's eye. We talked to the guy who takes you on his boat but died soon after. We decided to stop playing and tried doing it again but the guy who you are supposed to talk to to get on the boat disappeared and we can't get him to come back. We then installed the patch and checked to see if he was still there and he still wasn't there. Could someone please tell us how we might be able to fix it? Any help is appreciated.

did you save the game before you went to level four? I think it auto-saves the game when you go up stairs as well. It seems like it should be ok as long as you go back to a save game before the guy disappears.
