Dominate Vs Charm

Charm Person and Dire Charm both let you control opponents. How is Dominate Person better than these? Does it let you control monsters other than 'persons'? I realise it's harder to resist than the earlier Charms, but what other difference is their?

Didn't think that the charm spells allow you to control the enemy. Simple charm makes the enemy non-hostile but it doesn't seem to do anything other than stand around. Dire charm forces the enemy to attack, but I think you have no / limited control over what / who the enemy attacks. You might get more control with dominate - see if you can select some special abilities when you next dominate someone.

I don't tink Dominate lets you get access to spells or other abilities that a controlled creature has. Charm Person does make the creature hostile to it's former friends, but you have limited control over the charmed creatures actions. It is treated like a friendly NPC for the most part, although you can select and direct it sometimes. Dire Charm gives you the ability to tell the creature what to attack and as far as I can see allows you the same amount of control as Dominate. Can you Dominate Person a non person monster like a troll etc? The spell description doesn't mention being limited to 'persons' although the name suggests it.
