Icewind Dale Music?

I just got the game in the super collectors whatever and it seems there might be a problem it has with my computer, involving the games music. Either that or it is just how the game is: I have only ever heard one song in-game, the easthaven song. There is no combat music. I have gone through all of chapter one and part of 2 and have heard no other music but that easthaven theme song. I fought through the whole goblin cave and never heard a note of music. I guess my question is, is this how the game is supposed to go, unlike the baldur's gate games that played combat music every time you saw a monster, (or summoned a creature for that matter)?, or is it just screwing up. I don't really mind it, i'd just hate to think that, as good as this games music is, i was missing out on some of it due to a screw up. So, is there supposed to be combat music or not?

Oh, and as another question that has nothing to do with the other, are the R.A. Salvatore Icewind Dale books any good? My friend suggested them to me, but he lives across the country now so i can hardly borrow his and was debating buying them.

Should Have Music

You should be hearing music on a very regular basis during the game. You might want to check your game settings menu and see if the music (might be called background sound) indicator has been reset down to zero or off.

On a side note, the IWD collection comes with a great bonus CD that contains about 50 music selections from the game.

so, for example, when i was fighting the "monsters" (goblins) that stole the kids fish in the very beginning at the southeastern corner of easthaven there should have been music playing?

Some combat music probably should have been playing. When you get to Kuldahar the music should definitely change.

I do believe the fight with the goblins has some specific music that plays. Ravager is right about Kuldahar. In fact (on my machine), I have to turn the speakers down when I am in Kuldahar because that music is so loud. Every outside encounter in the Vale of Shadows starts the same specific fight music for that location/map. I would again recommend starting your search for the problem in the game settings menu. It may not be it but it is a quick and easy check. Always hate finding out a problem had an easy fix after spending time on more complex solutions that don't work.

Thanks, i look around then. I just wanted to first ascertain whether or not it was a problem, or just a difference between this game and Baldur's gate 1 & 2. I don't know if this is related but also some of the character voice sets don't make any noise, and all of my savegames other than the most recent do not display the screenshot or party members. Anyway, something, at least one thing is amiss. Thanks for the help!

I think i may have figured this out, and it is far from easy. I found other people with the same problem and apparently it has to do with a trigger called "battle song reference number" being set to -1 instead of 37, 38, 39, 40, 44, and 47 which i believe are the battle song reference numbers. I don't know anything about nearinfinity, which is the program they used to fix this and so... this may be a lot to ask, but can someone who has the game installed post or email me the .are files which contain the reference numbers. I don't think they are very big, just like 10k a piece. or explain to me how to use nearinfinity or infinity explorer, the other program i got. The only problem too is that i don't know what song goes in which areas of the game, so i would just be randomly assigning them....
Anyway, if anyone can i would be infinity appreciative, no pun intended.

EDIT __________
I just discovered that the files are in fact huge, so nevermind. And god-damned interplay is out of business so i guess i'm playing the game without music then....
