Dropped Items - Gone forever?

I thought I read this in the manual, but now I can't find the reference. Does anybody know if I drop an item on the ground, will it disappear after time has passed, or I leave and reenter a map area that requires loading?

Most items will eventually disappear based on in-game time (rather than exiting an area). Plot items shouldn't though. Putting things in any containers on a map will keep them there though, I often stash items in Conlan's Smithy.

Thanks. I figured it was something like that. Arrgh! When I started the game, I didn't really know what I was doing and inadvertently dropped the gems I looted from Hrothgar's place. I tried going back there to see if I could find them on the ground but I think they're gone. Weep weep. I need the money!
