Unhappy Gothic 2 - How to use a spell?

I'm playing the expansion and cannot remember how to use a spell. I'm trying to provoke Valentino so I can use the Oblivion Spell on him. In my inventory it's marked 4. I activate it by hitting 4, it shows up in my hand, then I use attack (which is my left mouse), and nothing happens.

Also, using a Short Bow, with Dexterity of 12, when I shoot, no arrows are used up; in other words, it doesn't appear to be using any arrows????

What to do?

If you assigned '4' to a spell you need to press 4 on your keyboard (you will notice that now your guy has a shimmering stuff in his right hand) then target your victim and press and hold Ctrl and press UP arrow. Same with the runes. For repeated use (if you have more than one scroll), hit the same keys.

If your last action was spell/scroll/rune use, do not forget to press 1 (or 2) afterwards, to activate your weapon of preference if you plan to hack-n-slash shortly...

About arrows: did you actually equip arrows? You need to have arrows in your inventory.

Right, I see. After hitting number 4 I'm not holding down the action key and pressing forward, just clicking away.

As for the arrows I have 91 in my inventory. Maybe I'm too far from the target. I experienced this when I went hunting with Bartok. I finally switched to the hunting knife to help finish them off.

Thank you, Lady Dragonfly, now I can try to take care of Valentino.

Lady Dragonfly, just came back and managed to use a spell correctly.

I tried the bow again and using your instructions did shoot arrows.

I've never had a problem with a knife, sword, etc. so must have been automatically, without thinking, doing it right.

Conclusion: I must hold the action and use the forward key in all instances, spell, bow and sword.

Thanks again.

You are welcome.
Make sure you 'take care' of Valentino in a quiet place...

I got him ... he leaves the tavern at about 4:00 AM, long wait, but it made it easier. Followed him and just before he turns down that small alley to go to the upper level I confronted him. Took him down with fists, used the spell, relieved him of his walking cane, and went on my way.

It went pretty smooth.
