Gold nuggets & Coins

I have about 65k worth in coins & gold nuggets in my inventory (among a crapload of other stuff, mostly alchemical ingredients). Do I need to hold a token inventory of coins and/or nuggets (say, for a quest) or should I get most of it converted with a merchant to gold which I know I will need?

You'll need quite a lot of nuggets and sulfur for the orc quests in Geldern, a few more quests here and there require these also. In general you can find enough in the surrounding regions though. Feel free to sell most of your inventory.
