What are the combat tips for Gothic 1?

Hey,

I just want to query about combat strategies for Gothic 1. Just started playing today and I feel very frustrated with the combat sequences and the controls associated with it.

Can anyone give me any tips as to how to survive in a combat? If this has been brought up before, can you give me the link?

Thank you.

Early on, run away lol. I'm serious here, pick your battles carefully as a low level character. Also, when packs of enemies/monsters, try to lure them away one at a time.

As for the actual combat controls. They take a bit of practice but once you get the hang of them they are really good as you have a lot of control over your moves in a battle rather than just click click click. They seem clunky and hard to use and like you can't hit a thing early on, but train in fighting skills and you will suddenly begin to notice a huge difference

I can't argue with mr_big, cause the truth always holds, right?

Remember, that most of the enemies will attack you when they see you. Using this approach you can try to lure them one-by-one away from the pack. Otherwise you will have - particularly in the beginning - a lot of problems even with lesser creatures, such as bloodflies. I am not completely sure whether in G1 exist Small Bloodflies, but that doesn't change the fact.

Know also that hitting one of them with arrow may cause that the whole pack runs after you. But such behaviour is best to discover by learning, since not all monsters act the same.

Using the melee weapon, I prefer the swing method: that is, stand in battle, than press Q and E (turn left/right, respectively - not walk left/right). On the other hand, my brother uses forward/right approach, and it works also. Guess you can develop your own fighting technique.

Yeah, why didn't I think of that? Was too accustomed to the Fable type of combat that I can literally take on multiple enemies at once. Should be more patient next time and follow your advice.

If you're referring to Neverwinter Nights, I understand. Don't like the control scheme there anyway. I might need some adjustments since I've become used to Fable's combat controls (one mouse click=one hit type) so it might take some time to get used to Gothic's combat.

I'll give that a shot. Always feel clumsy when using the forward attack method.

Thanks, mr_sir and Padawan for the combat tips and strategies.

Yeah, I was referring to NWN, Kotor and Morrowind I know they make combat so its just clicking so its easy for people to use, but I think Gothic's way is better once you get the hang of it. Once you improve you fighting skills you can start doing combo moves by timing you attack moves as well so I'd recommend practicing a bit when in an area with no enemies around just to get a feel for how to time your clicks etc. for the combos.

Could you explain what do those cheats do? I don't quite understand what you're saying.
