I think one of the issues which surrounds the FFVII mythos is that was the first of the (at the time) next generation of graphics, that it is happens to have been the only Final Fantasy game which was advertised. Usually the franchise simply gets by on its name, but with the switching of platforms (Nintendo to Sony), and the new media format, I suppose Squaresoft felt they needed an extra push.

I will admit that it definitely increased the popularity of the franchise, and brought it up from successful, to gaming legend.

Looks like I'm in the same boat as you here. I also don't own a console. FFVII was demonstrated to me some years ago by a friend of mine when I visited his house (on the PC, that is). Found it interesting and decided to go out and buy it. I personally find it excellent, given the fact that this is only one of the Final Fantasy games released on the PC (aside from FFVIII and FFXI). And yes, for the last paragraph, I agree. By comparing it to recent RPGs, I still find FFVII more original than the others I've played so far.
