Need help playing Blitzball in Final Fantasy X (no spoilers, please)
 

Man, I really love this game! The thing is, I'm having trouble getting the hang of Blitzball.

As far as where I am right now:
I'm at Luca around the time of the tournament. I do have a file there where Tidus learned the Jecht Shot. I hear the prize for winnning the tournament is a Strength Sphere.

How essential is it to win the tournament in Luca? Will it effect how well I may do in future matches?

Winning the tournament is not required. As I recall, I bombed it horribly (but then, I absolutely loathe the mini-games in Final Fantasy games). The sphere is nice, but it is also not the only one you will get over the course of the game. Do not put too much stock into winning or losing. If you continue to play, you will eventually dominate the field.

Coincidently, Blitzball is the only way to get all of Wakka's overdrives, and his ultimate weapon.

I thought it had something to do with Wakka. THe thing is: does the Luca tournament affect his Overdrives at all?

Frankly, FFX was one of those games that I got extremely bored and tired off upon finishing, as such I never did bother completing all the little side quests and ultimate weapons challenges. Just was not worth it, especially after seeing I would have to play blitzball to do so.

I've never been much of a fan of the Blitzball myself either, I tend to avoid it as much as is possible. I didn't win the Luca tournament, but it doesn't hinder gameplay nor effect later tournaments/quests- whatever... I love FF-X :) I'm one of those people that likes to make sure everything in the games I play is complete, I'm a first-timer, and so far have been playing the game for over 80 hours. Haven't been playing it much recently due to exams *sulk*

A simple update.
 

Just to touch base: I've played and won 2 non-tournament games in Blitzball so far. I tried doing the tournament, but it's not quite working out.

As far as the game goes, the group's just about to enter the Thunder Plains, so I'm wondering how far I'm starting to get into the game. Should I try to focus a little more on Blitzball (if I can win) right now, or do I still have much of the game to go? :confused:

What, nobody can give any advice? I know that Aegis is no Blitzball expert, but there's got to be one on this board. :(

You havn't gotten far at all. Count with ~30 hours of gameplay for the "real" game, and ~100-200 if you want to kill all the optional bosses. None of these requires you to win any blitzball whatsoever. The only reason you have for playing blitzball is either: making Wakka one of your maingroup or *wanting* to play it.

Thunder Plains, ey? Havn't you just gotten your last party character? I think you have a long way to go, like at least half of the game.

And while I don't consider myself a blitzball expert, I'm still undefeated. ;)
