Lately I've noticed a trend to make MMO games completely free of charge. Others only charging players for stuff they buy ingame. Now I read on the forums that Dungeons & Dragons Online has gone the same route. Perhaps it would be of use to keep a little list around, incase there are others or if more MMO's should follow suit?

So far I know of:
- Dungeons and Dragons Online
- Perfect World
- Savage 1: The Battle for Newerth (just a wikipedia link, as the Savage 2 site has replaced the original)
- Planeshift
- R.O.S.E. Online
- Pirate King Online
- Flyff
- Granado Espada

I don't know the name of the Korean game, but I believe that Savage: The Battle for Newerth and its sequel Savage 2: A Tortured Soul are two free MMOs.

Also Guild Wars, which is an episodic MMORPG is free; you just have to pay for the episodes and then you're off to the races.

That's why it's not going on the list. Adding the other ones..

Sorry Tricky, I kind of misunderstood what you meant by free. If you're looking for completely free than Guild Wars doesn't qualify of course. As well, I think you should take Savage 2 off the list as you have to pay for download.

Good, thanks for making that clear.

I remembered the name of the Korean MMO, by the way. Also added Planeshift. Was a bit too beta when I first tried it, but maybe it's coming together now.

I remember coming across an MMO called Granado Espada (or sometimes known as Sword of the New World) a while ago. Free to play and download, but it relies on microtransactions. Just be warned, client size is rather large at around 3.6GB.

I haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment much, but I did play other free MMOs (mostly Korean or Asian-based) in the past like R.O.S.E. Online, Pirate King Online and Flyff. Hope this answers your question.

Neat. Heh, yes that does indeed help answer the 'question', though it's really more of a general inquiry. GB isn't exactly an MMO site. Plus, what I do know of MMO's is all pretty old stuff from the pre WOW era. After that I just kinda lost interest. It just came to me that since that time there's been a lot of newer games out there I've never really heard of. And, as I learned this week, many of these new MMO's are using payment methods that aren't nearly as unattractive as they were six years ago.

If you like roleplaying, definitely add this one:

Threshold RPG

With 13 years of history and thousands of players, it is definitely worth a look.

Noticed this as well, compared to the MMOs I've seen and tried in '05 onwards. I played ROSE Online at that year and lucky for me, it was still in open beta, so no form of payment have been announced yet. Once it is completed, it uses the monthly payment method. Now, it's free with microtransactions.

Then there are other MMOs I've come across before 2008 that allows you a free trial where you can play up till a certain level or a certain number of days before asking you for a monthly fee (e.g. Phantasy Star Online). Haven't come across this type of free trials nowadays.

The information I mentioned are based on my experiences with Asian MMOs (particularly Korean), though.

I noticed the more popular ones are Korean. I am sad MxO is gone though, the sickingly cute anime style of those MMO's isn't really for me. But MxO was never free for play to begin with.
