HELP!!, PLEASE! cant get gothic 2 to play!

I have a fairly powerfull pc, with vista 64, I have played numerous older games without difficulty on it, and I read in a forum that gothic 1 and 2 worked on his and others vista 64, so I got it, and realy want to play it.
it seemed to load without any problems, but when I try to play it it wont
play, I have run it in xp compatability mode and tried other compatibility modes, such as 2000. I have tried various adjustments and turning things off
such as color and composition.
there is nothing else actively running in the back ground(open).
Any help or advice anyone?
