All depends on how you decide to recieve the given question, I guess.

| | I voted for Bloodlines.
While I think PS:Torment is truly among the greatest games ever made, the reason Black Isle died was because of Interplay's continued stupidity. More people didn't buy it because it was released around the same time as Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament and because I'm of the opinion that the majority of people are in fact sheep in disguise
I voted for Bloodlines because this game was developed on an immature engine, thus some annoying bugs upon release, with little or no fanfare or proper marketing by Activision. As a result, an incomplete patch by a team of devs under substantial preasure, who ultimately got hung because the product wasn't making millions for Activision.
I felt really bad when Troika's demise was announced; I waited for this game to hit the sale bins before picking it up because I heard nothing about this game. I should've picked it up sooner, like when it was released, I really enjoyed this game! If more of us would've done so, perhaps a sequel would have been in the works at Troika?

| | | For those of you who are choosing "Other", what RPG comes to mind when you're making that choice? Anachronox is really the only other one I would have liked to get added to the list, though I'm sure I overlooked others that should have probably been listed. I'd be interested in hearing about other underappreciated titles that I may not have even thought of. |

| | Underappreciated by who? The gamers or the developers?
I can't comment on Dungeon Lords, Gothic or Jade Empire...and I've only played a demo of Arx Fatalis that didn't impress me at all.
I voted VTM: Bloodlines from Troika. First Troika make a rather dull IP: Arcanum and then an even worse follow-up with ToEE and by the time they finally get the juices flowing and totally redeem themselves as creators of Fallout with Bloodlines it's just too late. DAMN!!
I wouldn't call "Planescape: Torment" underappreciated - on the contrary: it's quite appreciated and often hailed as one of the best RPG's of all times, it just hasn't sold very well.
The rest: Arcanum, ToEE and Lionheart has one thing in common: They didn't quite get the wholehearted attention from the developers they should have. Underappreciated for being underdeveloped. Too bad, but it makes sense. |

| | | I agree with previous posters that PS:T sure wasn't underappreciated, unless you take that as a 'underappreciated by the consumers'. It has been highly praised, both by reviewers and gamers, since its release till today as a one of the greatest cRPG:s ever. Too bad it's original setting didnt appeal to the mass market.
As for the others, its a hard choice.
ToEE had a great combat system, but lacked in being an actual RPG. Arcanum was almost the exact opposite; it had great roleplaying options and lots of depth, but the interface was a mess.
Lionheart had lots of potential, but it turned to be too much of mindless hack'n'slash.
Never played Arx Fatalis or Bloodlines, but im looking forward to when im able.
JE and DL never caught my interest.
Also, heavily criticized older games like Daggerfall or U8:Pagan would make great candidates as a good RPGs which were somewhat cursed with a crappy interface and gameplay quirks.
Out of the randomness, i voted for Arcanum. |

| I commented that I considered it underappreciated because of the attention that shouldbe paid to it has been stolen by the Fallout games and Baldurs Gate because of the engine and gameplay similaritie. I think it's hard to make the case that it has been as popular as those series, but that doesn't at all mean I believed it to be considered an inferior game. |

| | | I chose Bloodlines.Although i got most of the games mentioned on the list, and i like all those games,i think that Bloodlines really is greately underappreciated.
All of the dialogs are voiced in and the story line is awsome,in my opinion. It is very good that you can choose between many different ending and they do not base on the end,but on the actions you do in the middle.Very nice graphics, masterfully created dialogs...I have played it to the end for 2 times,3 times almost trough, and i still can`t get enough of it.
Clearly a very enjoyable game. |

| | | Arx Fatalis, don't know why, just seems pretty underappreciated although Bloodlines and Planescape: Torment are also underappreciated too.

| | I think Gothic 1&2 got all the appreciation they needed. Then again, I'm from Europe so things might be different here. Anachronox would be the other I would mention, truly an amazing game. From the list: PT definetelly wasn't apperciated at it's just value. It's a shame, really, the game is, in some respects, even better than BG.
As for TOEE, it doens't deserve anything. It's full of bugs and too h&s for my tastes. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
