(I really should try Obivlion one day) |

| | I dont know if i'd try that. If you think morrowind got rid of a bunch of fun items oblivion wiped out like half the game!! They pretty much dumbed everything down. got rid of a bunch of armor, combined swords and daggers, axes and maces, was less guilds/factions. You might injure yorself playing it. *echo, echo* |

| | | Very huge toss up for me between Bethesda and Obsidian, but in the end, of course, I chose Bethesda. I'm such an elder scrolls junkie. I never cease to find tiny little surprises thrown into bethesda games, even after I've been playing them for years. Obsidian games are amazing too, but I find them to be more cut-and-dry. No neat little secrets.

With this i could not agree more. i've been playing morrowind since it came out and i still find things i never knew were there. Of course i haven't really played very many other RPGs. But i would still have to go with Bethesda because of morrowind, i just feel FREE when i'm playing it.

The developer of the Final Fantasy series, Square-Enix, did a very swell job on them and others videogame series as well, particularly the Kingdom Hearts series. Its a pity that Square-Enix is not mentioned in the poll, though.

I think it's a tie between Bethesda and Squaresoft (yes, Squaresoft, not Square-Enix) though. Elder Scrolls and FF are both great RPG series, but you can't really compare them. Elder Scrolls prides itself on open-endedness, whereas FF focuses more on the story. They also draw different audiences because FF is easier to pick up and play. Elder Scrolls requires a mad-hardcore-gaming mindset to enjoy. |

I think both are good but, as you said, it varies between the play style of people. And you're right that the Final Fantasy series is easy to pick up and play. That was why I was very much into the series compared to the Elder Scrolls series as I've tried Oblivion before and didn't really like it. It feels like I need to be very familiar with the series in order to enjoy the game, just like the Ghost Recon series.
To be honest, I am not a hardcore gamer. I'm more of a casual gamer. That could explain the fact that why I don't fancy playing D&D powered games or certain games that have certain hardcore elements in it, with the exception of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series.
And about the strenghts of both the Elder Scroll series and the Final Fantasy series, I also agree with you that the Final Fantasy series prides itself in good storyline that draws you in. That is also the reason why I like it very much. As for the Elder Scrolls series, its more open-ended but since I never played the series before, it's hard for me to say whether I'll like it or not.
Reading all this had me thinking for a while. Sorry for going off-topic here but I noticed that the RPGs for the PC are mostly open-ended whereas RPGs on the consoles are mostly linear. Don't know why is this so. Frankly, while I do appreciate the effort of the developers of open-ended games to give the players an open-ended experience, I'd much prefer to play a linear game where the plot dictates the outcome of the game rather than you (the player) dictate the outcome of the game. It may be because I've played a lot of linear games but the point is I like to be part of a story rather than you dictate the flow of the story. Never liked a game with multiple endings and I can't be bothered to know all of them.
Anyway, I would love to see some linear RPGs for the PC but I wonder if any developer is willing to do that. Just a hunch, though it would be nice to see some.
P.S. Sorry for the long post.

| | Though one. I would have to say Bioware, for the multitude of RPG's it has released. Second it would be Piranha Bites, for the great Gothic series. |
