Which role-playing setting do you prefer most?

Take into consideration both tabletop and video game options before making your decision.

In my opinion, I prefer the fantasy setting for RPG type games. This is because most RPG games in general have long been associated with swords and magic. I'm okay with RPGs with other type of setting but it does feel kind of weird playing them sometimes. As for post-apocalyptic and the sci-fi setting, they seem to be more suitable for FPSes and other more action oriented games like Doom or Half-Life for example.

I absolutely agree. I associate rpg's with the tradition of The Lord of the Rings and the epic iconographies, fantastic dreams, and mythologies that inspired Tolkien and other 19th and 20th century fantasy writers. These elements were at the heart of the development of pen and paper Dungeon and Dragons gaming, which of course, is the primary influence on computer rpg's.

Give me swords, wizards, rustic worlds on a grand scale, heroes, monstrous enemies and I will give any game a chance to prove itself. For instance, I just finished reading the first 2 parts of the inheritance trilogy and eagerly await the movie based on the first novel, Eragon. I'm hoping it will be the best movie of the year, aside from the re-mastered 3-D version of A Nightmare Before Christmas, of course

In sum, give me more of Worlds like Morrowind!!

PS To be specific, I cannot imagine playing a pen and pencil game that isn't fantasy related.

I'm mostly into fantasy for RPG settings, although Post-Apocalyptic holds a mighty star with me as well due to the Fallout-series.

Agree with DesR85 here for sure.Fantasy seems the one closest to the original RPG s...

Althought, yeah-Fallout changed my opinion for some time. Then ofcourse, taking tabletop into consideration--Fantasy!

This was a tough one. I love rpgs and games in general that have horror/vampire kind of settings but I also love fantasy/medieval kind of settings. In the end I went for fantasy though as I love playing sorcerors etc. and battling weird and wonderful monsters and dragons

It's a little bit hard to vote. Games like Baldur's Gate, Stonekeep and Ultima Underworld have my fondest memories. But I can't imagine I'd have liked them any less if the setting had been different but created with the same care and creativity.
I would have played Morrowind with the same enthusiasm if there had been, uh, Klingons instead of Orcs (SF), Romans instead of Imperials (alternate history) or Captain Wonder instead of the Nerevarine (superhero).

I enjoy the rpg - fantasy "dungeon-crawl" type games... my only real experience with the other types... sci fi, alternate history, etc... has been with my teenage son wiping the floor with my noob character... so I make him go mow the lawn and I sit down for a go at some morrowwind!

If an RPG is done right, I'll take it with any of these settings. A solid Dungeons & Dragons game is probably my first choice, but someday I would love to see FASA move away from action games and develop an isometric party-based Shadowrun or Mechwarrior CRPG.

Agreed. A *good* rpg will be home in any setting but I would like to see more sci-fi settings. Really, I'm alright with any kind of setting but I'd like to see more sci-fi settings for the sake of having some variety. Sometimes I feel that fantasy based role playing games are beind done to death.

Some of my favorite sci-fi based computer role playing games are:
Buck Rogers (SSI goldbox game)
Phantasy Star (on the Sega Genesis)
Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2.
System Shock 1 and 2. (1st-person-shooter/rpg hybrid)

I had to go with alternate history, although I have yet to play a game in sucha setting that's any good...

Fantasy would have to be next I suppose for fairly obvious reasons. *cough*baldursgateneverwinternightsmightandmagicic ewinddalejadeempirearcanum*cough*

Sorry, allergies acting up again.

Alternate Fantasy I think . How else could the Planescape Torment setting be described?

For me it's fantasy setting. Of course, my favourite RPG of all time is Fallout -series, but those are the only Post-apocalyptic RPGs I have enjoyed... So, that's why I'm choosing fantasy.

Maybe I'm not objective in choosing the right answer in the poll, but due to Fallout series I have chosen post-apocalyptic. Fallout-series had a great influence on my point of view on rpg games. That's why I have picked up PA, but we can't forget about fantasy games, which are great as well.

like bucksatan said, an rpg is good no matter what genre it is if its a well-made game. i prefer fantasy tho(i kinda hate the idea of indestructable superheroes that, if they get too close to a certain rock, they get real weak. kinda stupid. also some sci-fi gadgets are just too weird)
