Gothic Horror Setting + Medieval Fantasy Setting = Ravenloft
As many here have mentioned, a setting doesn't make an RPG great. But my favorites over the years happen to be the Baldur's Gate Saga, the Diablo series, Icewind Dale series, Torment, and Ultima games... all medieval fantasy settings.
Torment and Fallout are shining examples of games that can be amazing without being standard Medieval Fantasy. In terms of the game industry, I think it's a tragedy that Torment didn't sell well. I think many of best "successes" (as defined by the industry, not us) have mostly been medieval fantasy games.
World of Warcraft is widely heralded as the #1 online game. But I have heard that Blizzard Entertainment is working on a World of Starcraft online game. I hope it does well, too. A successful non-medieval fantasy game might help other game-creating decision makers to take a chance on "out-of-the-box" inspirations. Then we'd have a better chance of ending up with a special game, the way Fallout and Torment have been so special for so many of us.
I voted Horror, because Ravenloft is my favorite setting, and I assume Horror can mean Gothic Horror. Plus maybe a game-creating decision maker will see this poll, and notice the multitude of votes for settings other than Fantasy...
What I wouldn't pay, for a Ravenloft game from Bioware using the Baldur's Gate engine...
