| | | What was the best RPG of 2006? Another year is behind us, which means that it's time for our visitors to pick their favorite RPG of the year. If you choose "Other", please post a reply listing the RPG you feel should have been on the list. |

| | Unfortunally there wasn't much - but I refuse to vote for the Oblivion-graphics engine so I'm putting mine on NwN2 instead |

| | | "Other." I tried several RPGs this past year, and none of them impressed me.

| | | I have only played NWN 2 to be honest. However, I have heard bad things about all of those on that list. From what I have heard, the list includes a group of poorly made sequals, poorly thought out new games, or carbon copies of older games remade with new story lines.
So, I'm going to vote for NWN 2. Not because it's a good RPG, but because I happen to have been amused by some of the commentary between the characters on my first run through of the game. At least the writers put some amusement factor into the game.

| | | 2006 really wasn't a good year for RPGs. Neverwinter Nights 2, Oblivion, and Titan Quest are all pretty good for what they were meant to be, but, like most of you, I'm still waiting for another game similar to Baldur's Gate, Fallout, or even KotOR. I'm optimistic that Dragon Age and Mass Effect will help restore some of BioWare's credibility, and am looking forward to some of the "old school" RPGs in development like The Broken Hourglass, The Age of Decadence, and Eschalon: Book I. |

But I do agree that The Broken Hourglass, The Age of Decadence, and Eschalon: Book I hold possibilities for the future of the kind of RPG we really like. Remains to be seen, though. I've given up looking to the corporate products, though. If something good is going to appear, it's going to be from a developer that has yet to be purchased or swayed by the likes of Atari, Ubisoft, EA, etc. Just my POV.

| | | I had to Vote based on the ones I've actually been able to play, so it's a bit biased, but so far it seems for me that Final Fantasy XII actually has a rather good story. I like most everything about FFXII aside from the character advancement system, but other than that, the game rocks. |

| | | I am with Sib on this one. Final Fantasy XII was by far the best on the list, though it was probably overlooked for the most part on account of it being a Japanese RPG on a console. Frankly, the PC has not put out any decent RPG's for sometime, and I really feel consoles are where the stronger RPG's are going, especially with developers like Nippon Ichi, Atlus, Tri-Ace and Square putting them out.
The PC market has become too saturated with the MMO style, or Diablo style of RPG's for any other type to really make a splash at this point in anything besides imagery, and even then, next gen graphics tend to be shiny, with little else... |

| | I agree with both Siberys and Aegis on the state of PC RPGs. I voted for Final Fantasy XII as well even though I never played that game before (I don't own a PS2, by the way). The other big titles like Neverwinter Nights 2, Oblivion, Gothic 3 and Titan Quest never really appealed to me. The reason both Neverwinter Nights 2 and Gothic 3 never appealed to me in the first place is because of the numerous bugs and glitches and not to mention the performance issues that plague those two games (I played the Gothic 3 demo and I lost interest after playing it for a while). Oblivion never appealed to me because it feels strange and the game itself is a systems hog. As for Titan Quest, it reminds me a lot of Diablo (a game I really didn't like in the first place).
I also agree with Aegis that PC RPGs these days seem to be saturated with MMORPG features such as customising physical and facial traits of the main character (since when was this the main focus of any RPG, let alone any game at all?) as an example. I agree with Aegis that rhere are a lot more solid RPGs on the console compared to the PC, I admit, even though they're mostly Japanese RPGs (albeit linear too).
I'm slightly off-topic here but I also find that 2006 isn't a good year for RPGs. The year 2006 seem to be the best for games from different genres such as Shooters, RTSes, adventure games and action games, to be honest. Games like Company of Heroes, Call of Duty 3, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey comes to mind when I think of 2006.

| | | #1: Oblivion (in spite of the obvious flows it is still better than the other games)
#2: Gothic3 (could be #1 but it is too bugged; still much more fun than NWN2)
#3: Titan Quest (cool clone)
#4: NWN2 (feels dated, linear and boring; terrible henchmen; my major disappointment; I dropped it after the first chapter, maybe I will finish it some day when I have nothing else to play)
I did not play the other games.
Overall, I am still waiting for a good RPG...
Happy New Year to everybody!

| | | I didn't play most of those games except Oblivion and NWN 2. NWN 2 had the best story and the conversations between the characters were very well written. Okay, it had a few bugs and the camera was very bad sometimes but I enjoyed it very much. I liked Oblivion for a long time but after a while I found it to become boring because the story didn't appeal to me very much. I also didn't like the way the fighting went. But the graphics were beautiful. But I play RPG's for the story and the gameplay and not for the graphics so I voted for Neverwinter Nights 2. |

| | I gave my vote to oblivion, it's the best one of the ones I played on the list which are Oblivion, NWN2, Titan quest and marvel ultimate alliance which imo doesn't count as an rpg...
despite some stuff that I didn't like about oblivion..it's still the best..NWN2 is very hard to control and all the views aren't good and I always click on the wrong stuff, also it requires lots and lots of loading which spoils the continuity of the game..
titan quest is fun..until u reach lvl 15 or 20 when u take forever to lvl up..that's when I lost interest..
I played the demo of Gothic as well and it's very buggy and full of glitches, I have to thank DesR85 for warning me
I guess if I had a PS2, I'd gave my vote to Final Fantasy..one of the best games I played ever was FF8..I wish they make new ones on PCs again.
rest of the games, I didn't play...yet
