How much interest do you have in Obsidian's new Alien RPG?

I grew up watching the Alien films, and firmly believe an RPG based in the setting could be excellent - if done right. What do you think?

I selected "somewhat interested."
Indeed, if done properly an RPG based on the Alien series could be really good, and quite unique. I also really hope that Ridley Scott has input....

The "if done right" part is always the main consideration in RPG's.

Yep! And so few of them seem to be "done right" these days. But.. I have ranted on this subject at length in various other threads, so I'll shut up now

Back to the topic, though, I could really see an RPG based on the Alien films. Maybe, since they're not traditional RPGs, we'll get really lucky and the developers will draw inspiration from games like Fallout or Planescape Torment...

Somewhat interested, but not for the if done right perspective.

I have very low standards for an RPG. Obviously, when it's going to advertise it has a very indepth and compelling story, I expect to see that, but if it doesn't, I at least know where my 40 bucks are going to. But no, I have nearly no standards on what I want in an RPG, just so long as it actually has RPG elements and isn't just an army combat gun game.

The reason I say somewhat interested though is simply because I'm not a big fan of the "Alien" genre. Alien 1 was good, Aliens, Alien 2 and 3, and Predator VS Alien all kinda sucked to me. So, whether or not they do a good job on this, I'm still only slightly interested due to the fact that I'm not too into the alien genre.

I voted "Not really interested." Not into the Aliens series, even though they were good. I find the movies okay, but I'm not sure if an Aliens RPG would turn out to be that interesting, to be honest. However, I'll wait for further articles about this game to see how it turns out.

"Not really interested." I was pleased with KotoR2, despite the obvious rush-out-the-door stuff, but NWN2 has dissapointed me with its simple characters, all too obvious linearity, and dumbed down puzzles.

Not really interested either, especially if it turns out to be turn based. Alien versus Predator was created when Rebellion Development was still an indie game developer. It introduced a lot of new elements to the FPS genre at the time. I just don't see Obsidian do anything like that.

...

Has Bioware been reported to license its new Mass Effect game engine to other developers yet?

Can't say I'm really interested. RPGs are starting to bore me as I feel they get worse and worse.
Also - I'm not really into the Alien "genre", I mean the first movie was good - but the remainder ... sheeez. And then resurect, clone and what not just to keep it going... bah.

Also Obsidian Entertainment does not strike me as a patron for quality. I liked KOTOR2 (more then KOTOR1) and I liked NwN2 (more then NwN1), but I still feel they aren't "trying", but instead rushing the games out.

But ..... once the marketing hype starts to gather round, and if I can deduct some useful information from it - I might become more interested in time. But currently - Not really interested.

Weren't there a few rumors floating around about the possibility of Obsidian developing an Indiana Jones game as well? Or does this announcement mean that such speculation was in error?

Either way, given their current workload, I'd say there's a strong possibility that either someone else is working on KotOR III or the game hasn't even been started yet. If the latter is the case, we probably won't see another sequel to the franchise until at least 2008.

If its done well then I'd be interested as I really like the films, but I doubt I'd rush out an buy it - I'd probably wait to see what others think of it first.

a difficult worldsetting to make an RPG with I think. I hope Obsidian knows what it began with.

A lot of the guys (or at least one: Fergus Urquart) that are working for Obsidian came from Black Isle Studios and I have always liked their games (Icewind Dale, Fallout, Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil). I will admit that their games haven't always been of the best quality (number of bugs, crashes, stability, etc...) but their feature sets and content have always been appealing to me. In other words, I'll probably keep on eye out for this Alien rpg and scoop it up if the reviews are positive.
