Which aspect should RPG developers devote the most time to?

Obviously any solid RPG is going to require some depth in most of these areas, but which one do you feel is the most important to the game's success?

Didn't vote for one....Character development and story are a tie in my opinion.
For myself, these two are what attracts me to the game.

I went for character development although it was a close call between that and story/dialogue. Both are the key elements for me in an rpg, but character development is the part of rpgs that I really enjoy. I love developing characters and building them up and developing personalities, strengths, weaknesses, skills etc. then using them as part of an epic storyline with great dialogue and plenty of twists and turns, and dialogue that really feels like you are making a mark in the game world as a result of personal choices and actions. This is what I want in an rpg, and then fun and enjoyable combat is the next thing after these together with interesting and unique artifacts, items and weapons.

I went with the story. As i still play some older games for the story as this is the best to me.If the story was not on the list then it would be the character development.

Same with Bluestorm. I also voted for story as not only is it important in RPGs but also for games in general as well. A story that draws a player in is what I call a good story, pity very few RPGs have this. That's why I still prefer the Final Fantasy series over the other RPGs that I've played, to be honest. They have a much better story compared to the others like the KOTOR series, Neverwinter Nights and Fable: The Lost Chapters to name a few.

The second most important factor, to me, is character development. Particularly the main character. Getting to know other characters (including the main character) and see how both main and side character develop throughout the game is what I find interesting, though I find main characters in RPGs lack this. Hope the developers focus on the main character as well as the NPCs.

Wow, that was an easy choice for first place, landslide for Story/Development.

Story/development of course.
But I thought one of the most disappointing things about NWN were the graphics. The interiors of houses were dull and nasty (okay a few exceptions, like the wood nymph's house), came as a shock after just having finished playing BG triology with the fab graphics and interesting companions.

I went with the landslide majority here but I also would have liked to vote for "character development" and/or "companions and NPCs."

My vote went to the story, though character development came close.

Oh, and I agree with Buck that any good rpg needs every one on the list to be developed well, excluding the graphics (IMO).

I could list dozens of good RPGs, which doesn't suprise with good graphics, yet are very good games.

Agree with Bluesky

It's definately character development and story. Look at Oblivion. Although story could have been longer, it still has great character development.

strange question

I believe this is a strange question: all but few RPG's build upon a strong story-line. Everything else is recommended though not necessary.

I ask you: name one good/popular* RPG that has a weak or boring story.

*I do not suggest that popular means good and vise versa.

Well I certainly went with the majority but if I were to add a category I would put Good Stable Coding at the top of my list. This multi-patching for PC games is getting out of hand. Look at Neverwinter Nights 2; they have released a 5th patch already (though #5 is presently in beta form) and it still isn't enough to cover all the issues.

Uhm.... Where to begin?

*Neverwinter Nights
*Fable
*Oblivion (by many accounts, at least)

And that is just for starters.....

I think that they should focus more on NPC/ Player devolopment because I have not seen an NPC worth remembering since Bastila in Kotor 1. And the last time I truly liked the charactor I was playing was my person from invisible war because there were so many different options for him.
