Personally I can definitely live without the music, the first thing I do in every game is turn the music off.

Yes, you can.
I have played numerous well made MUDs and text-based RPGs and ASCII based RPGs, though most of the ASCII games were more hack 'n slashing, but at least those were more closer to RPGs than Diablo or Oblivion (my opinion, of course).

I dont mind playing a game with a bad story if it excels in other areas but i prefer it to have a decent one but for me charcter dev is most impotant definantly but the 2nd thing i look for in a rpg is a decent amount of armor because i think it is a reason to reach higher levels because not only the higher level you are the stronger you get but with a good armor system you also get the btter looking and more effective armor as a reward.

So...if the game has good character development and a decent amount of good looking armour you're happy? Are you sure you didn't forget to include top-notch graphics?

Everybody has their opinions on what they like in a game, and there's nothing wrong with said opinion. If a company devotes most of their time on character and graphics, and that's what a player is looking to be satisfied with in the game, then said company has done their job.

Think about it, diablo 2, not the greatest graphics, story was horrendous, but many players played this game for seven, maybe eight years if they still aren't playing it, and that was due to combining armor and weapons and character builds.

Really? Hmm. I've been mystified by Diablo 2's appeal for a very long time. Many people I know seem to be obsessed with Diablo 2 up till this very day, even though I didn't jump into the Diablo 2 bandwagon myself. There were a lot of reasons, though I couldn't recall what they were.

That is the very same reason why my friend enjoyed Neverwinter Nights so much (aside from the alignment). I've tried playing it before and I was quite baffled by the number of classes there.

Open ended design is by far the most attractive element to an RPG. I find the 'rails' annoying in an RPG design. Icewind Dale, 'Dum Dum'(Dungeon) Siege, and some other games come to mind. Give me the option to go when and where I want, and I'm a happy camper.

You mean 'on-rails', is it? Yeah, I get your point. I don't mind a game being open-ended but not too much. If it's too open-ended, it will feel as if the game lacks focus and coherence, in my opinion. The one thing I did notice is that the story in most of these open-ended RPGs are always the same (and cliche). Linear games, on the other hand, seem to have a much better (and more engaging) story than their open-ended counterparts. Just a thought, though.

I voted for Story/Dialogue, and in my mind Characters' development is part of that. Music is important to me --still remember those amazing dragon battles in BG2 and how inspiring the battle music theme was-- but I could certainly bear a lousy music should the story and character were excellently developed.

I thought the NWN Single Player story weak due to being far too similar to Knights of the Old Republic. Not surprising since the same people developed both KotoR and NWN. There are not many RPGs out there that don't have cliched story elements. The only one I can think of that was fairly unique was Planescape: Torment. Diablo 2 is better known for the cinematics than the story. And forget D2 multiplayer, where it's just a mad rush to see who gets to the Cows the quickest.

I agree with that. I don't think you can have a good role playing character without a good background story, his motive for certain actions and ethical alignment which causes his reactions is sort of a crucial thing in a good RPG.

The type of story in Neverwinter Nights is the same as the story in Knights of the Old Republic? I thought the story for both those games are completely different from each other.

Kind of agree. I find that the most common type of story in most RPGs and quite a number of other games are the 'Save/Destroy the world' or something along those lines. There are other cliches but this one is the most common of them all.
