1UP has compiled a list of what they consider to be the five most disappointing video game sequels of all time. Chrono Cross comes in at #2 while Deus Ex: Invisible War takes the #4 spot:
How do you follow up a revolutionary first-person shooter like Deus Ex? The simple answer: Don't drop the complexity that made the original so different in the samey FPS genre. It's true that games like BioShock have toned down the RPG elements of their older siblings without suffering as a result, but Invisible War felt far too much like a remedial version of the original. Instead of taking advantage of greater technology to build bigger worlds with even more choices, Deus Ex underwent a dumbing down that stands out more as a wasted opportunity than the streamlining of a once-intricate game.

How about Oblivion or Kotor 2? (althought Kotor 2 beats Oblivion anyday IMO)

KoTOR 2 was awesome and beat KoTOR 1 as a sequal in my opinion.

Kotor 2 had too many flaws IMO and I have bad memories from bugs on Nar Shadaa. Kotor 1 was a finished game and although Kotor 2 was a great game, as a sequel it didn't work.

I guess it just depends on if you count glitches or not. Because of patches being free so long as you're patient, I never worry about bugs and glitches.

KOTOR 2 was a poor sequel, mainly due to the lack of professionalism, too much cut/unfinished material, and bad scripting, technically a far worse sequel than Oblivion IMO.

Had they had the professionalism to actually finish the game as designed, and actually got the RPG elements right it would have been superior to KOTOR IMHO, but they didn't, end of story.

How anyone can call Oblivion brilliant or a masterpiece makes me wonder if they've ever played a decent game to be honest. It definitely ranks in the top ten in disappointing sequels, but remember quite a few people thought that Morrowind was a disappointing sequel to Daggerfall. I disagree, due to the terminal bugs in Daggerfall, it wasn't even at beta level when it was released!

I agree for the most part. But I think that's different from the type of games they list here, where generally the design concept is just a poor choice for the game that is being sequelled to: as is the case for Deus Ex 2 and MGS 2. And the case for Oblivion, in one way or another.
