The editors at OXM have ranked what they feel are the five worst DLC add-ons available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. And the #1 spot goes to...
Horse Armor
Description: Quite literally, armour for your horse
Price: 200 MS Points
Already On Disc?: No

"Tamriel is a dangerous place," reads the description. "Protect your horse from danger with this beautiful handcrafted armor."

Thus, the life of the most notorious bit of DLC on Marketplace began. For 200 Microsoft Points, you can buy a metal coat of armour for your horse. It doesn't actually protect your horse. It doesn't serve any purpose. It just hangs limply from your horse, like a sad metallic shawl. The worst DLC of all time, bar none, and will probably remain so until the day Xbox 360 dies.

I'm pretty sure I read very similar comments about about the same download, on several other sites. Not identical--my point isn't that this is plagiarism. Rather, that it's saying what everybody else has, for quite some time.

My biggest problem with the Horse Armor mod was that afair they had already announced that it would be a DLC before the game had gone gold. Which to me made it feel like that they had cut or kept something out from the game on purpose so they could sell it afterwards.

My biggest problem is that Bethesda recognizes that horse armor is wrong, yet they have yet to 0-price it. I'm sure they could negotiate that with Microsoft somehow considering what an embarrassment the thing is. Or if not 0-price it, just pull the damn thing.

But nope, despite their claims that it's the result of inexperience and "an experiment", they're still happy to sell it. What does that tell you about them?

It really doesn't. This article details everything you'd want to know about the Horse Armor, including several minor bugs that were introduced with it, and are evidence of haste. This is the effect of the armor:

Quote:
Putting armor on the horse has the game effect of increasing the health of the horse. For most horses the health doubles, but with a max of 750. See the Horses page for full information.
So it doesn't increase protection, but does increase maximum health.

...Which is all kind of pointless if you get the unkillable horse that's in the original game.

Bethesda knows that they screwed up with Horse Armor but they're perfectly willing to get every last cent they can from their golden goose. The fact that people buy (and still buy) Horse Armor is why they won't pull the mod.

Why would I want to pay real money to keep a fake horse alive? Especially since I can use fake money to just buy a new one if it dies.

I'm afraid the company that did Morrowind is long gone. The one that did Oblivion had entirely different goals, and certainly isn't above implementing good mod ideas from players without giving credit, while issuing their own bad "mod lite" and charging for it with a straight face.
