Post PC Games of Fall 2006

IGN PC has published a five-page feature entitled "PC Games of Fall 2006", in which they offer mini-previews for a large batch of titles being released before this year's holiday season. As far as RPGs are concerned, the list includes Neverwinter Nights 2, Gothic 3, Guild Wars Nightfall, and a few others. A bit about NWN2:
While the single player roleplaying game may have dwindled in popularity, that doesn't mean that there aren't some great titles coming down the line. Top of our list right now is Obsidian Entertainment's follow up to BioWare's superlative Neverwinter Nights. The sequel maintains the same D&D roots of the original game but adds an even more exciting story, much better graphics (they have ceilings!) and loads of other updates. Even more awesome, players will be able to obtain and manage their own strongholds and eventually train their own armies. The social aspects of multiplayer gaming are well represented here and the comprehensive editor allows players to extend the fun indefinitely.

Interesting line-up of games. I'll be looking forward to some of them, particularly Gothic 3, Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and FEAR: Extraction Point.

What to Expect: The best way to describe this game based on the hit TV show is "Sim-like" in terms of style and gameplay dynamics…but don't be deceived. Under the hood are the makings of a game which could very well appeal the core audience of the show, and more importantly, bring the much-desired female demographic to the forefront of gaming. For any of you who have played The Sims you will feel right at home with the interface. Although it looks very close to a Sim title, this engine has been built from the ground up for Desperate Housewives: The Game. Not only does this cut down on licensing fees, it allows them to build in-game advertising right into the heart of the game. It may not be a game for the hardcore, but there's undoubtedly some appeal from the TV crowd that wants to be part of the backstabbing and dirt flinging.
A Desperate Housewives game? Now that is something I didn't expect. I'll give it a pass since I'm not into that show anyway but, to be honest, its kind of weird to see a game like this.

What a shiny future. Gothic 3 looks very interesting - but besides, Age of Decadence is the only game I truly anticipate. And it's not listed. But heck, it's no AAA title and they probably haven't even heard of it yet (and probably never will).

"Dwindled in popularity"!? What single player roleplaying games did we have lately? Make another Baldur's Gate 2 and watch how popular single player roleplaying games can be.

Just imagine!!! Ceilings! Now I finally know what was so crap about NWN! It didn't have any ceilings! Obsidian just got another customer! With ceilings NWN2 will be RPG of the year without a doubt. I'm preordering right *now*.

Perhaps Obsidian should consider developing RTS games.
