The editors at CNSNews have published an article that blasts BioWare's Mass Effect for featuring "graphic" premarital sexual intercourse and homosexuality.

A new, best-selling video game, Mass Effect, made for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console, allows the characters to engage in explicitly graphic sexual intercourse. Some game experts and pro-family analysts say Mass Effect is marketed to young kids and presents a moral danger to them and that the companies making and marketing the game should be prosecuted.

The game is "clearly marketed to minors," Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Research Council, told Cybercast News Service.

"There are cultural implications for feeding porn to kids in this way," and "when you do this, you're teaching them a distorted lesson about human sexuality and human dignity. These are lessons that they will take with them into adulthood and ultimately society," Ruse said.

Porn? Calls for prosecution? Are you kidding me? Aside from a split-second showing of a naked backside, I thought the romance cutscenes were pretty tame.

Umm, yes there is. Before each commercial, which is only aired after Midnight, they say "warning, the following commercial contains explicit material not suited for minors," and they even say that again during the commercial, and at the end when they advertise the phone number.

Heh, you have no idea how hard it is to be a parent do you? Though I'm not a parent, I'd say I've had about 25% of the experience babysitting my little brother for days at a time, and believe me, there's a lot of times when you just stop caring about what you believe the little things are. For instance, kids want video games, this is easily true among millions. So, if a parent were to get them a video game, the features of the game itself would probably be the least of their worries at the present time, as they may have shopping needs to be finished or say other errands for other places, etc. Parents may see the M on mature, and while some would stop themselves from buying it for their 10 year old, others might look at the pictures and say "well this doesn't look so bad" and buy it.



Personally, there is no blame that can be placed. The kid doesn't know any better, the parent already has enough responsibilities and expecting him or her to pay attention to everything seemingly mundane is absurd, and the game companies follow strict guidelines on how to rate the maturity level of their game, as well as marketing guidelines for their commercials (which NO mass effect commercial seems to be for kids whatsoever. I've seen three or four different trailers and all of them just from the commercials alone I wouldn't buy for a child unless he or she was at least 15 to 16 years of age).

And although no blame should be placed, one thing I think would help solve a lot of issues is requiring that all employee's who sell said game take a brief moment to explain that "This game may not be suited for your child due to the violence and sexual activity built in." While this is technically a requiremenet anyways, in reality hardly any walmart or K-mart employee gives a crap about stuff like that, and they should.
