Lost Odyssey is a predominantly excellent effort, successfully capturing the essence of a genre which has been marginalized by the technological gameplay advancements of recent years. Though it likely won't extend far beyond its hardcore niche appeal, those who take the ride will find the trip more than worth it. For any flaws in the gameplay or presentation, this is old-school gaming at its 21st century best, a potent mix of compelling narrative, daydream-inducing art design and classic role-playing mechanics.

We have immense respect for what Lost Odyssey tries to do: be a back-to-basics JRPG with modern technological trimmings on the 360. Unfortunately, it's less a celebration of what made older RPGs great and more a crude relic of their past. When we were a half-dozen hours in, we had hope that the combat mechanics would gain some depth and that the storytelling would find its rhythm. We're still ready to forgive the technical issues, if only Lost Odyssey could come together as a game. 360 owners desperate for something turn-based with magic in it can turn to Lost Odyssey for some comfort, but for the majority of genre fans that time would be better spent replaying one of the classics from which Lost Odyssey draws so heavily.

Lost Odyssey proves that a turn-based RPG still has merit in modern gaming. While there is nothing in Lost Odyssey that will convert action-RPG fans, there is plenty to please those already singing in the choir. Lost Odyssey creates several memorable characters and a somber setting that should please those sick of JRPGs that seem made for 10-year-olds. There are quite a few things that go wrong -- from the bad stealth portion to performance issues -- but none of it kept me from enjoying the overall adventure. It may not be in the same class as Mass Effect, but for a system in desperate need for more quality RPGs, Lost Odyssey fits nicely into the 360 library.

Amid its many peaks and valleys, Lost Odyssey is the first exciting realization of a compelling, next-gen Japanese RPG. If it’s an epic voyage into the realm of fantasy you’re after, you’ve found it: Lost Odyssey is a role-playing adventure that shouldn’t be missed.
