JoWooD Productions issued a press release this morning announcing that they've chosen Spellbound Entertainment to develop a fourth installment in the Gothic series.
JoWooD presents Gothic 4 Developer

Liezen, Austria 23rd of August: JoWooD Productions Software AG is proud to present Spellbound Entertainment AG as the official developing team for Gothic 4.

One of the most convincing and central arguments for choosing Spellbound was the scope of RPG experience brought in by Spellbound team member Jochen Hamma, who was involved in creating the legendary "Nordlang Trilogy" based upon the Pen&Paper RPG "Das Schwarze Auge".

Furthermore, Spellbound has created own tools for archieving exceptional standards in quality and quality assurance. Both parties are confident to produce a game of highest quality and Spellbound intnds to focus on the traditional strenghts of the brand, setting new standards in the original, authentic Gothic essentials.

At the Gamces Convention 2007 in Leipzig, Mr. Jochen Hamma, Spellbounds Executive Producer, is showing the first facts and plans to curious fans and special interest media, outlining which stenghts are essnetially to be intensified and which weaknesses are tagged for elemination.

Gothic 4 is being developed for PC and Current Gen console systems, a release date will be announced in the comming weeks.

Not sure how I feel about this actually. Gothic 2 and 3 were awful games to try and control. Solid story, solid gameplay, but the controls were so much of a turnoff that it couldn't be played.

But now, with a new company who has somewhat of a reputation, this can go good or bad. Good obviously because they've been a success before, bad because it's someone brand new taking over the gothic series and he might not know what to do.

It's a matter of opinion. I liked the controls etc. Prolly saying that way too much these days.

1 and 2 were both masterpieces in my opinion, but the 3rd lacked a bit in character. And I hated the absence of chapters since without them the player had to be the catalyst in EVERYTHING.

I guess I'm hoping they'll keep the overall look and feel of the game and bring back chapters or at least some way of making events happen without the player having to initiate every single one of them.

First of all, who the heck is Spellbound Entertainment? What other games have they made aside from Airline Tycoon? Not sure how the game will turn out to be as I'm not familiar with this developer.

They also did Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge, Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, Perry Rhodan: Operation Eastside, Smoking Colts, and Chicago 1930. I've never played any of them, so I have no idea what to make of their track record.

Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood was a decent but not very imaginative realtime strategy clone.

Not sure about Cooper's Revenge, but Wanted Dead or Alive was a very good game.
