Post Gothic 3 Interview

The guys at Firing Squad were able to track down Aspyr's Blaine Christine and quiz the executive producer about Pirahna Bytes' upcoming Gothic 3.
Q: What are some of the dev team's favorite creatures in the game so far?

A: Well, there are a huge number of creatures in the game, some old and some new, but I think there is little doubt that the Minecrawler is an all-time favorite. This ugly creature is a cross between a preying mantis and a tarantula to my eye. With the new animation system they are using in Gothic 3, its movement is very creepy (as you would expect) and their size is daunting when you first encounter one in the game. Another nasty creature is the Ogre, but I think the main attraction for this ugly foe is their sheer size and the fantastic modeling and texture work that went into its creation. As with the Minecrawler, the first time you encounter one of these guys, you will definitely think twice about attacking him.

Interesting interview by FiringSquad. I look forward to this game even more, though I'm not so sure about the system requirements of the game. Hope that it is accomodating for most computers. Still, I the fact that there are no loading screens in between is kind of good, though it the loading of the game will be very long, in my opinion.

FiringSquad: There will be no loading screens in the game. How hard was it to get such a feature in Gothic 3?

Blaine Christine: The seamless gameplay world is always a challenge to implement, but can be done as long as it is planned for in advance. This is a feature that definitely requires the developer to think and plan ahead; it is not something that can be added on at the last minute. Happily, this was a key component that was important to Piranha Bytes from the start of development, so the end result is a great gameplay experience for the player where their suspension of disbelief is not interrupted by loading screens. Unless, of course, you die and need to reload.
I'm still not sure about the system requirements mentioned back at the Gothic forum but it is way more steep than even Oblivion itself. Perhaps this might be the reason? I don't mind waiting for a long time for the game to load but I'm not sure why 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB of RAM.

As far as I know 1 GB is the minimum.

Btw, did you know that climbing as well as lock-picking doors was thrown out? Sure, the latter wasn't very usefull in the last two Gothic games anyway, but it's not the skill to be blamed but the devs who didn't implement it well enough. The same sad story everywhere you look. I just hope they haven't streamlined the game too much...

I quite like the lockpicking in the Gothic games - its a shame they've got rid of it

I agree with Mr_Sir that lockpicking (and climbing) was fun.
(BTW, I like your new avatar ).
Besides, lockpicking skill is an essential part of a rogue/thief character. Are we going to have a chance to specialize as a rogue at all or the fighter/mage paths are the only options? I know they are implementing lots of skills and intend to make it more like an ES jack-of-all trades custom class, but to get rid of the lockpick skill??? Are all doors and chests going to be unlocked now? Or will they require a "special key" which always annoys me because I don't understand what is so special about this particular lock that makes a virtuoso burglar unable to open it (Oh, yeah, it is "under a very special spell" which annoys me even more)?
And climbing? No more climbing to reach a strategic spot for a bit of an ol' good target shooting??

Anyway, where did you get this info?

I'm intrigued as to how they will get around the lack of lock picking too. It seems a bit ridiculous to get rid of something that worked quite well in the other games. The system they had where you actually had to think a little to pick the locks was really good. I hope they don't just decide not to lock anything as its not very realistic for people not to lock up their valuables!

Maybe instead of getting rid of the skill, they are just making it simpler like in other rpgs where you just click on something to unlock it It would be a shame if you can't play a rogue-like character, especially as a lot of the stuff they have done to the game looks quite promising.

Sorry, I spread some misinformation. Correct is: there is lockpicking, but no mini lockpicking game anymore. If your skill is high enough and if you have enough lockpicks a locked door or chest is instantly unlocked. My bad, sorry.

In addition to climbing diving is also cut. Don't ask me why...

Now, just wait a minute... In the previous games you had to learn the Lockpick skill only ONCE to open any lock, without need to IMPROVE it by investing more LP in it. Same way as with Sneak. The modifier was dexterity (less broken lockpicks). I hope they kept it that way.
