Post BioShock Shouldn't Have Worked

Eurogamer is offering up a couple of choice quotes from Blue Omega designer Jason Minkoff about why "BioShock shouldn't have worked."
"Take BioShock: no frigging way that thing should have actually worked out. Fantastic game, awesome design, and beautiful artwork, but the thing is a damn underwater Steampunk 1930s combo thing. How should that ever have done well?

"But it's a damn good game. They just put their hearts into it and happened to hit the mark. And that's what we're trying to do."

Did he really ask how something with "awesome design"and "beautiful artwork" could be successful? And considering the relative mainstreaming of steampunk in the past few years, why would he list that as a drawback?

And Irrational (or whatever the hell they've changed their names to now) did have at least something of a following behind it. Not to mention commercial airtime... sooooooo... he's really confused about this?

Console crowd anyone? It's of no surprise that console players were bowled over by a game like Bioshock coz they have never played a game like that before. Furthermore, it is so easy that even a grandpa/grandma can play it, as what Ken Levine had mentioned previously.

And lets not forget the hype surrounding Bioshock. Lots and lots of hype and even going as far as claiming that it will 'revolutionise' the FPS genre. A lot of people fell for it even though it turned out to be nothing more than an average FPS with RPG elements thrown in. Don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that this game relies heavily on hype for it to sell.
