I do, but it still ends up crashing when I exit rivet city, fast travel, or wait. Even tried to fire all followers and kill Dogmeat.
I even started keeping a lot of saves for fallout 3 also. But apparently I didn't make enough
But I always end up saving over them, since I "know" I'll could never bear to go all the way back 7-8 hours or so..
This doesn't happen anywhere else than Anacostia or Rivet City. And it really sucks since loads of quests require you to go there. And I really want to blow up Megaton

This may be off topic, but I don't recall having to go near either Rivet City or Anacostia to blow up Megaton. SPOILER All you need to do is to follow Mr. Burke's orders and then travel to Tenpenny Tower to witness the big Ka-Boom!
Not that I'm encouraging you to do anything of that sort

No spoiler, only wanted to finish the megaton quests first. The survival guide thing. Don't know why I just do But I guess I'll skip it now and continue with all there is to do outside Rivet city.

You can complete the survival guide quest even when Megaton is nothing more than a smoking crater in the ground. Look for the quest giver, can't recall her name, in the Underworld. She should have survived the explosion as a ghoul.

This happened the first time when I traveled to Rivet city. I was doing the quest where you put explosive collars on people. And when I go out again the game crashes either on the loading screen, or it happens after 10 sec-3 min in the wasteland. If I go back to earlier saves this doesn't happen, but after some time it will either way. I'm not even sure what triggers the crashes
that number interests me, 35 hours. I'm having same issues after 34 hours few minutes right today, and before that too days ago!! I've been a whole day saving new savegames each on a new slot (after restarting to play from level 6 or so) and that fixed "apparently" the crashes ... but they are back now after 34-35 hours ...

I have 4 new followers mods (Kelsey, Brianna, Slave Raider and Bittercup) and 2 or 3 new cells-areas mods installed, the rest only outfits and dialog mods ... and I don't have the unofficial patch or Broken Steel, only Free Play after MQ mod.

I'm certain that new areas cause trouble for sure, specially if saving in them or near them (I disabled autosave on travel and on wait), saving far from them helped me a lot but still looks like savegames corrupt progressively the more you play ...

and yes, forcing followers wait or chill out before entering new cells or conflictive areas helps indeed. I'm not sure about Rivet city problem, I have crashes anywhere once a savegame is "corrupted" or conflictive (more in Megaton if you ask me). Sometimes I just delete the savegame and replay to resave and try ... which makes me play twice same things!!

glitchy games ... and mods ... anyway is fun

ah almost forgot? so, sure you don't have any mods? just unofficial patch?
