Question question about stealth

Fallout One

I was wondering how the stealth skills (sneak, steal, lockpicking) work. I read that to be able to steal items more effectively i need to pickpocket from behind the npc. But does the sneak skill come into play at any point? Or is it just to get past enemies without being seen? And is there a point to have a good lockpicking ability or can you perhaps always steal a key and get it open that way instead?

Was planning to play a sniper/thief, but with limited tag skills i'm not going to make all three of those so i would like to know more about them to able to make a good choice.

Lockpicking is the only one I ever had much use for. It made life a lot easier when trying to get to place I wasn't supposed to be.

I do know that pickpocking can be used to place things..... (hint: boom)

It seems to me stealth can be a great help in hand to hand combat if you have the option to get in the opening shot.

Some of the games skills are straight forward. With some of these skills, like the ones you picked, the games limits are only part of it. The real use of these skills depends on your imagination and willingness to experiment.

Through perks, attacking enemies from stealth mode in melee yields to much greater damage.

Well

Sneak can help you pick pockets, however it's even easier if you "use" a few bottles of alcohol on your victim to reduce their perception to one. Sneak also helps you take stuff from shelves without getting caught, but again it's easier if you "use" a few bottles of alcohol on any nearby observers first.

But to me Sneak is most useful when you're going into combat with a map full of enemies. If you're in Sneak mode only those nearby will join the attack. With a high enough sneak you can snipe everyone.

the sneak skill is a trash skill IMO. not worth putting points into it. there are some potential situations where you might use it but no worth the points.

edit: and dont use any "stealth" perks. also not forth it.

Why not are those worth of using?

i dont see the point in sneaking behind people when you can just blow their bodies away. and sneaking perks are not worth because there are far more powerful and more important perks to use. i mean, if you play as a sneaking character, the "silent running" perk is really useful and makes it a lot easier, but sneaking is not what i prefer. other perks are far more important, and investing skill points in sneak is a waste IMO because you have also more important skills to raise. but ok, thats my opinion, you dont have to agree. if you like a sneaking character, go for it and you will surely have fun also.
