Gifted: broken?

Why do some people here in our august forum consider Gifted to be "broken?"

Because it adds way more than it takes. All other quirks are reasonably balanced, but not so Gifted.
  • You trade skill points for stat points, but since stats make up part of your skill ratings, your skills immediately go back up a little already.
  • Imagine putting all those extra points into Intelligence... You'd get such a boatload of bonus skill points that you'd reach a break-even point before you are well underway.
  • Stat points kick more butt than skill points.
  • You don't need every skill (nobody needs three different weapon skills, for example). You do need every Stat. Some more than others, depending on your character theme, but all of them matter.
  • You get loads of skill points to distribute each time you level up. More than enough for the skills you actually care for, so who cares they start out a little lower? Not so with Stat points; they're hard to come by.
When generating a character, I'd choose Gifted without even thinking about it, then I was in for a hard time choosing the second quirk.

Well - that might show it is overpowered - but that is not broken

I always took gifted - thoese +1 stats are just to sweat to give up

I see how Gifted could be considered quite overpowered. Thanks.

Heh, I've always disliked gifted. I rather take those 5 extra skillpoints per level and drop my endurance or so... I mean... there is always armor.

i must say that i really missed the extra skill points in the first hour or so of the game, it's really helpful after that if you take gifted. not necessary by any means, but if you're going to get above level 4 or 5 then gifted has no disadvantage to speak of.

I guess thats depends abit on how you play, personally I dislike most of the NPCs in fallout so if im going to do as many things in the game I can I need to be good in alot of skills. wich in my case usally means 9-10 int and not gifted.

i tend to play solo myself too. i think it's just the fact that i always try to do as much as possible, which gives me a lot of experience, and i like to have as many different perks to choose from as i can. i think gifted and non-gifted can balance out, but the ability to take a wider variety of perks helps in my opinion.

Yes, the stat requirements for the perks are the worst part, but its not impossible to put it all together with some planning...

i must admit that when i have a specific 'class' in mind for my character i don't take gifted, limiting me to appropriate perks, while being more specialised in the skills i want.

In Fallout anyway, I always choose Gifted and Fast Shot - the fact that it's broken to include all weapons means that you can get 1AP shots with the Super Sledgehammer, for example, which basically breaks the game difficulty-wise. What fun

In Fallout 2, even with gifted and fast shot, I had a helluva time with the end baddy. He's tough as a mountain.

Didn't you use the gun turrets against him?

Have never had any problems with Horrigan without using the Turrents with my sharpshooter chars
Just aimed shots at the eyes and he would crumble as cheesecake

Yes....even had the Enclave squad going at him. But the trouble only came in my first game when I was rather pathetic at choosing and using "the right" things. The next time through was a piece of cake
