Has anyone seen this before and gotten their game to work?

My path is the default:
C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2

Ok, let me try and be clearer.

When I run Install, the Progess Bar (showing the 'amount' of installation complete) gets to about 2/3 done, then stops. By this I mean the CD-ROM slows to almost nothing and information stops transferring to the HD (no red HD light on my computer).

I wait 5-10 minutes then a message box comes up saying that the installation is complete and that the BG2 movie is going to run. This message doesn't look right. By this I mean it pops up but the whole message 'description' isn't there. The end is cut off. It is hard to explain, but the colors look off I think. Anyways, I get the meaning of this message and just click OK.

The BG2 movie runs, and I wait for it to finish.

Now I am back to my desktop. I go to my Start Menu and run the game. This is where I get the 'text font' error I explained earlier. The only option it gives me is to hit OK, so I do. At this point, I am still at my desktop as I can't run the game because I get the 'text font' error.

From here I can run AutoRun from the CD and I see that the 'Install' option is still available, and the 'Play' option is not.

I say the Installation did not complete because that is what I THINK happened since the progress bar stopped during the installation process AND the AutoRun still thinks the game needs to be installed. I believe that not all the game information got transferred correctly.

I was hoping to be able to find some help on the forum from people who have had similar dealings with FO2 and WinXP and found a way to get it to work. I love this game, and will be very depressed if I will no longer be able to play it on my machine. I cringe at the though of having to 'Frankenstein' my old HP PII 350 machine just to play this game that we all love. (And in order to do that I would need to find a replacement 8GB HD, I fried my last one.)

HELP?!

I Google'd the test font error and found a Polish site that has the fallout2.cfg file for download. I traslated some of the site in an online translator and it seems that this me be some help. I will try loading this on my system when I get home.
http://www.kasiakrak.piwko.pl/patche.html

I guess it brings me to this question. What is supposed to be in the fallout2.cfg file? This one shows alot of settings, but in the one on my computer I only see the 4 paths that were brought up in a previous post.

Following Added 1/25/05:

I also found this thread which says you can choose to run fallout2.exe in Win98 mode in the .exe's properties. I'll try this too.
http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=30262

I am just researching as many leads as I can find that might help someone else in the future.

UPDATE:
I tried all these and came up with nothing. I ended up doing a Large install option, not Huge and it installed and worked. So something is wrong with the Huge install for me.

UPDATE TO UPDATE:
After further ispection of my CD I have found a small, but deep, scratch in my disc. I should have given it a better inspection initially but since it was new I thought there wouldn't be that problem. Anyways, I get the same problem with my computer when I manually try to transfer the 'master.dat' file from my CD to my hard drive. (I think it is master.dat, I'm not at home right now.) So I think the scratch is interfering with the transfer of the master.dat file.

YEah only large install works

I was having the Fonts error message as well, but uninstalling then just doing a Large install made it work for me. My cd is pretty much perfect and scratch free.

It would seem that it is a problem with Service Pack 2. I installed it on my desktop without the service pack and the huge install works fine but on my Laptop with SP2 it gave me the error.

Anyway at least its working now, even if i have to put up with waiting for my cd drive to spin up every now and then.

what a strange bug.

Angry fallout 2 fullscreen error

I just purchased both Fallout 1 and 2 on Ebay and the game loads just fine... The problem is, is that when it goes in to full screen mode, the game is shifted to the left and upper part of the screen... it's very off centered. How do I fix this? I've toggled with the display properties from true color to high color and various screen resolutions... My computer is new and everything is perfect, it's just when Fallout 2 comes on, the full screen mode is all messed up. I can't even play the game b/c the start game button is off the screen.

Thanks!

few thing you could try:
1) You could try to chance your screen height- and vertical postions and size from monitor. The bad thing is that if it does work, when you quit the game you have to change those settings back
2)What video- or 3d-card are you using? And what directX? Have you updated your video card's drivers?
3)Hve you tried to reinstal the game, with different install type?

My guess is that your problem is with video card.

lol

Yes I tried to install it a different way, and yes I also adjusted the screen ALOT, and yet this still didn't work. and my computer is brand spanking new so I shouldn't have a problem with the video card... But my video card is Graphics media accelerator 900 (82915G/GV/910GL Express chipset family). I am surprised this isnt' working because I am able to play alot more complicated games like Final Fantasy 11, and that works just fine. Is there a windower program I can download so Fallout can play inside a window? so it doesn't take up the whole screen? Everything else works but this...

How do I update the drivers?

If you installed it later to same computer, then you experienced one of those temporal problems, that occurs at times to everyone. In this case, you shouldn't worry, cause now you know that the game work on your comp. Maybe the installation weren't successful when you installed game first time. I have had such problems numerous times, so that's why when I have problem, with game I try to reinstall it few times

Yeah, you could have been lucky when installed it second time
Most of the times reinstalling does help. For example, my Diablo 2 LoD one day began crashing every time I tried to play it. I reinstalled it, no help, reinstalled again, worked fine. And the problem never occured again, and it has been several years now.
