When does an augmentation work?

So, there are augments like exp., health, mana. When do items augmented items actually benefit:
- just owned (carried in inventory)?
- set to be wielded (but not actually active just at the moment)?
- it's the active weapon at the moment?

They work if you have equipted the weapon that has those augemtations in it.
You do not have to use that weapon, just cary it on your back.
