| | True Necro -> Necromancy i'm new to this forum and don't really know how it works so i'll jus post my problem here:
first, here's my caracter stats right now: 3 wizard/ 3 priest/ 2 Mystic Theurge/ 1 True Necro for a total of 9 levels.
The first level of True Necro gives the "necromancer" ability that says: "when casting a necromantic spell, all her spellcaster levels stack for the purpose of determining their effect". Does that mean that each level of Mystic Theurge count for 2 level of spellcaster when i cast necromancy spells?
so if i cast a Vampiric Touch what would be my caster level 9 or 11, 4d6 or 5d6 of damage? |

So, this means for a spell:
- if you cast a wizard spell like Magic Missile, your caster level would be: 3 wizard + 2 Mystic Theurge + 1 True Necro = caster level 6
- if you cast a arcane necro spell like vampiric tough, your caster level would be: 3 wizard + 3 priest + 2 Mystic Theurge + 1 True Necro = caster level 9
- if you cast a cleric spell like Glimph of Warding, your caster level vould be: 3 priest + 2 Mystic Theurge = caster level 4
This is so because of the difference between divine (cleric) and arcane (wiz/sorc) spells. Those levels don't stack.
The Mystic Theurge can cast both, so this level stacks with all kind of spells. Wizard levels stack with arcane spells. Cleric levels stack with divine spells. True Necromancer stacks with wizard spells (it's a wizard prestige class) and necromancing spells of the divine sort.

| | | I just got "Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead" last night and there is actually a True Necromancer NPC described in the book who works exactly as Rob-hin says.
If you're playing a Necro, I can recommend the book! Plenty of new and very nasty Necro spells. Bwahahaha! |

| | | Oh well that's too bad. Then i guess the mystic theurge is a strong enought prestige class as it is.
thanks a lot, and i'll try to find that book you're talking about |

| | | Mystic Theurge is quite a powerful prestige class all by itself.
If you are heading into necromancy, I'd go the True Necro, and ignore Mystic Theurge entirely to be honest, simply for roleplaying purposes.

| | | well the mystic theurge is really powerful so i want to try that class (i'll be the first one i know to use it) plus there is no other healer in the group so the cleric spells are welcome in the group.
I'm taking the True Necro class for the necromancer and desecration abilities since i'm gonna be a lich soon.
We just discovered the Necromancer base class a few days ago in the "secret college of necromancy" book, so i'll probably change my character by replacing the wizard by that class, so the necromancer ability will be even more usefull than before with all the necro spells i'll be able to cast. |

| | | Can't say I've heard of the "secret college of necromancy" book. Who is it published by?
And you do not need to be a necromancer to become a lich - any powerful spell caster (able to cast 6th level spells) can become a lich. Well, apart from a druid.
On top of this, it really is more of a roleplaying thing. Why does your character want to become a lich? How does this fit in with the game, and the rest of the party? |

Well my character is an extreme Nerull lover, so controling death for eternety is his goal right now, and what better way to do that then becoming a lich.
PLus the DM gave us the possibility to have a powerful template at lvl 1 for free (no level penality), so the 2 people i'm playing with right now are half-fiends and i'm just human (wich kinda sucks). But i really wanted to become a lich and couldn't at lvl 1, so i'll be able to become one at lvl 11 with no exp penality. |

| | Congrats on discovering the true necromancer cheese! You stack all caster levels when determining the caster level for necromantic spells, so in your case that would be 9, as Rob-Hin said.
Lastly, I'd like to say that I think they Mystic Theurge sucks ass, but that should probably be debated in another thread

| | Spaming along with you on the MS issue, I agree that they suck. On first glance they appear to be very strong, but boy talk about a cold shower.

Which version of the Mystic Theurge are we talking about here? Have you seen the one in the Complete Divine? Ouch. Ouch I say!!

| | | Me too.
Problem with the MT is that he gets no feats whatsoever.
I've been trying some maximesed fireballs and stuff like that. IMO this is a huge benefit but some others may disagree with me.
Perhaps MrWeasel has some other points. We've talked about the MT before but can't seem to find it again.
