Tips for making new classes and races?

Hey.
I've been paying D&D for about a year now, and I'm now iterested in making up some new classes and races for our games.

Does anyone have some tips like things to avoid?
I'm worried about fairness and making the races fit well into the game world we have.
thanks so much

Do NOT make the class/race blind... I tried that once, and it sucked... couldn't see, and the DM cut the tremor sense out of the class... And remember to keep the bonuses in line with the losses.
