Post the future of D&D based CRPGs.

Hasbro now has the D&D license. Hasbro has no experience in making a D&D game. Will they ruin the D&D name?

I think the future is unpredictable. Right now we are looking at Pool of Radiance and Neverwinter Nights. But what comes after that?

Will history repeat itself? Will D&D CRPGs die out like they did in the mid-90s until Baldur's Gate brought it back to life? Then there is the future of the RPG community. Will developers eventually stop developing RPG that appeals to REAL RPers because it will make less profit? What I think is that every good developer in truth is a hardcore RPG fan. However, I think they have come to a realization that making hardcore RPG games alone will not sell. So they decided to implement RPG features that they like into other genre such as action genre. The lite RPG element will eventually become heavier and blend in with other genre because people have gotten used to them.

I think D&D based CRPG will once again fade for a while after Neverwinter Nights. Eventually what is going to happen is that people will be playing modules made by other people on NWN and wait for a killer game that bring life back into D&D CRPG.

Why should they? They're not going to make CRPGs. Some developer is going to make 'em for Hasbro. And CRPGs in any kind will survive, as long as there is a perceived, large enough market to pay for 'em. Lucasarts has Bioware doing Star Wars. Ubi Soft is hinting broadly regarding a followup to PoR. Sierra is already in discussions for another CRPG from Troika as soon as Arcanum is released in a day or so.

So long as folks don't grab warez and buy, instead, I'd say the future looks good, indeed.
