| | Racial/Creature Stereotypes? I always thought there was something that was commonly misconcieved about a race or creature in D&D, particularly over a long amount of time, whether it was during one edition or multiple ones.
The biggest one I can think of:
- Dwarves being less charismatic than other races/creatures because they don't bathe enough, or they're plain ugly.
Puh-lease! So over-done. By later editions, particularly 3.5, this was dumped in favor of Dwarves being too secretive and untrustworthy in every creature that wasn't a friend. They've got secrets to keep, after all, so why be so sociable?
Besides, I know of at least one Dwarf that charms women off their feet.
Now, I'm going to hand the mic over to someone else to come up with a common stereotype.

| | | Two words:
Half-orc Barbarian.
Hate 'em.
I don't allow half-orcs in my campain unless with a non-fighter class.
They have no value in a party expept for bashing things (that is good), but in any non combat situation they are rediculous.
In online games you see so many of them that they almost are a completly new race! Bah.

The irony was, he was too stupid to be fooled by the trick |

Other then that, they have no role playing value IMO. They are dumb and generally played in the same manner.

My most annoying sterotype are the usuals - Dwarf Fighter with axe. Elf Mage. Halfling Thief. You know the drill. <sigh> I much prefer PCs with a different feel entirely. Played a Dwarf Druid recently, that was cool.
Cheers,
TGHO

| | | No no no, all those numbers are SYMBOLIC. Think of a lard ass/lazy wizard with DEX 5 and con 4 (well to think of it, she'll have 1 hp in the beginning -> a little bite from a rat could kill him -> realistic?) but anyways, having a DEX of 5 doesn't mean she'll be as agile as a...snake?
And the difference between a INT 9 and INT 8 is ridicilous. Like one point could make a difference of how you can speak.
But enuff of those.
More stereotypes:
1. Dwarf with braided (?) red beard, likes gold and ale, uses violence over logic and uses a battleaxe.
2. A Legolas type of elf. Sooo cheezy
3. A "beautiful" blonde male paladin
... well actually all know these steretypes (that are awful, btw) but the worst must be the dwarf. |

| | Just to be different, I once played an uncharismatice Dwarf Paladin, who drank nothing but tea, was a vegetarian, and used a wooden club as a weapon, and rode a goat. It was fun |

Uh, note I said an INT of 4 or 5, not 8. And the numbers are not symbolic, they allow us to get a grasp on our character's limitations.
@Aegis
Now that sounds like an interesting PC!
Cheers,
TGHO

| | How about a Drow wielding a dual scimitar?
Most abused FR character I'd say.
(and many players don't like him)

Aaaarrrghhh!
I hate that PC sooooo much. I used to like reading Salvatore's books, but now I just can't stand them. Grrrrr... Stupid Driz'zt clones...
Cheers,
TGHO
PS: Congrats on the 4000th post, Rob.

PS: Congrats on the 4000th post, Rob. | Hey I didn't say I played it.
I do have a player in my campain right now who does though... coincidentely, he just read the Drizz't books.
4000 already? phew! Hadn't even noticed.
Thanks!
@ Fiberfar
LOL
Why are so many low on inspiration? Does sound like a funny sight!

| | Can I come over to your next session and wring his neck?? Bah on Driz'zt. Fie! Fie I say!
Several of the DnD authors (most of whom are dreadful writers) really subscribe to the stereotypes as well. It's very disappointing to read a DnD book and see the same old characters over and over again.
I've always seen RPGing as breaking moulds, and trying new things. What's wrong with playing a Halfling Necromancer? Or a Half Orc Bard? Sounds like fun to me.
Cheers,
TGHO

| | Halfling Necromancer... nifty.
Another one I though about...
Dwarven Battleragers being highly unintelligent. Sure, they're likely surly, but making them constantly portayed as rock-brained idiots? *sighs*
