Memories...

No, this is no promotion for the Musical Cats, but rather some sort of poll...
Of which character(s) that you have played do you retain the fondest memories?

Mine are:
Gawain Thal'Rhad, elven Bladesinger. He was my first character. He had a knack for getting his friends out of trouble after some grand scheme backfired. On average, he was running around the battlefield, trying to defend all his partymembers from dangers, while they didn't even realize that there was any danger whatsoever. Imagine the 8-bit party, with the arrogance of Thief, Black Mage's urge for destruction, Red Mage's far fetched plans and the stupidity of Fighter. Those were the people Gawain tried to defend.
Gwydre Longinus, draconic aasimar Paladin/Crusader. She is my current character. Only level 4, so we don't know each other well yet. Most of the time, she's shy and introverted, but a fury if she witnesses some injustice.

my first character too, a 2nd edition thief. he was an acrobat/juggler in a city entertainement group, who were doubling as asmuggling/thieves guild law enforcement unit. his best friend was a dwarf with a war dog

My fondest is my first and only. Honestly, I shouldn't be posting here because I don't nearly have as much D&D experience as most here have. But I fondly remember that first character I played for a whole weekend at my nephew's house.

Second edition. I played a dwarven rogue. I have some doubts now whether or not my character was entirely of my own design, but I had fun with it. It was quite good at finding traps and I sort of spearheaded the whole party with it most of the time. Which is probably only why I was the one who finished the quest our DM set out for us. A treasure hunt, I believe.

After that weekend, years went by when I wanted to find people to play D&D with. Few people I knew then had heard of the game, so I gave up on it eventually. Ten years later I gave up on the entire town and moved to Amsterdam. Yeah, I guess I should've seen that one coming.

It's still my perfect D&D experience though, as simple as it was. Memories have the good fortune of growing better over time.

Geepers that that is a hard question....there are so many fond memories of characters I have tried....I'll list a few:

Cameron (dwarf/fighter) - took him through the module The Lost City back in the days when you played a module straight out of the box set. The Lost City was the 1-4th lvl module that came with the first box set. The funny thing is is that the boss creature was called "Zargon"...now Zargon has actually just resurfaced again in 3.5 ed. in the Elder Evils book....which is pretty cool.

Another goody back from those days was another fighter character called Tylor. I took him through modules Castle Amber and half of Isle of Dread. Unfortunately he died in Isle of Dread....he was happily flying on his broomstick of flying just above swamp water infested with pirahnas when one of his walking team mates triggered a lightning bolt trap that blasted him off his broomstick into the water wear he got devoured...

A couple of my 3ed characters that have been fun was Moran (monk 12th lvl) - he had insane skill checks for Swim, balance, climb, hide, move silently and all those agility type ones however when it came to hitting the enemy with his hands....well lets say he was so bad he probably couldn't even hit the side of a parked bus....

The other that I have fond memories of was a Paladin by the name of Van Seleck. I have the DM to thank for this campaign that made this charcater a whole lot of fun. Basically the DM set our group in a situation where as we walked into a Dragon's den where as the Dragon had just been slain and the slayer had been killed at the same time....we of course inherited all of the treasure and magical items at level 2 however the campaign was based around a world full of islands so we ended up buying ships and hiring crew to flee from powers a lot higher than us who sought our items that we had stumbled on.....turned out to be a great adventure and we had a few casualties along the way. But by the end of it my character was quite memorable having AC 30 at level 2....

My first character was also the greatest. A 2nd Edition female half-elf fighter/mage/thief. Despite me being extremely lucky when I rolled her up, giving her stats waaaay above the norm, she entered the campaign at a time when the other characters were already 5-6th level, and suffered quite a bit of abuse. After years of playing she ended up as a level 10/12/12 pirate captain, at which point she wiped the floor with absolutely everything the GM could throw at her. We decided to retire her in style after she conquered a small country. I tried to repeat the success with a 3rd Ed Shadowdancer, but it didn't feel right.
