How do you feel about munchkins?

I am currently in a campaign with 3 of my good friends, i realy enjoy creating a character with personality and a meaning but the others in my group just briefly come up with any character background they can think of (usually consiting of a loved one dying) and then go straight for the great cleave. my DM sees no problems with this but i cant stand it when they choose there charcters for no other reason than bieng uber and leave me to be the secondary healing or sneaking classes. Do you all feel that you should make the most powerfull character you can or do you like me prefer actual role playing?

current character isnt a healer but isnt uber
least not with a sword

i stick to the shadows in terms of being very outspoken and let them brag about how good their guy is
character development is more interesting and often leads to more success than a mindless machine

I dislike munchkins.
You character should always be well thought of, or you'll have no bond with it what so ever. That doesn't mean is should be weak though, even in combat.

A sneaking character can be powerfull if played well.
Avoid combats, take the roleplaying way and backstab, dubblecross or whatever instead.

Make a nuce background and create a powerfull character to go with it.
However, talk your DM into trying non-combat problems! Climb down a wall while the tower is burning down on you... see how the munchkins do with all their skillpoints in combat skills. You have climb points though and make it down easily.
Or, instead of your DM doing this in his campain... run your own and do it yourself. Give another point of view, they may like it.
